"the LORD opened the eyes of Balaam"
The Uncovering Β· galah Β· H1540 Β· HEBREW
To uncover, to reveal, to expose what was hidden β galah is used for the removal of a covering; God did not give Balaam new eyes, he removed the film over the ones he already had
Balaam was a professional seer. His business was spiritual sight. And he was blind to the most visible thing on the road β an angel with a drawn sword that his donkey could see clearly. Spiritual credentials do not guarantee spiritual sight; sometimes the most professionally religious people are the most spiritually blind. Balaam needed God to open his eyes, not to give him new ones.
π Numbers 22:22β31 Β· What the Donkey Saw FirstBalaam was riding his donkey toward Moab β toward a deal that would pay him well to curse Israel. God had told him not to go. He went anyway when the incentive was high enough.
Three times the donkey saw the angel of the LORD standing in the road with a drawn sword. Three times she turned aside, crushed Balaam's foot against a wall, and finally lay down. Three times Balaam beat her.
Then God opened the donkey's mouth β and the donkey asked why. And then God opened Balaam's eyes β and he saw what his faithful animal had been trying to show him the whole time.
The donkey was the wiser creature. And the prophet was the one who needed God to open his eyes.
"the angel of the LORD standing in the way"
The Blocked Road Β· derek Β· H1870 Β· HEBREW
Way, road, journey, course of life β derek can mean a literal path or the direction a life is headed; God placed an angel in Balaam's derek, his course, not just his road
The angel was not standing off to the side suggesting a detour. He was standing in the way β the path itself was blocked. What looked to Balaam like an inexplicable problem with his donkey was actually God's protection in the form of an obstacle. Not every blocked path is the enemy's work. Sometimes the angel is in the road because the road goes somewhere you should not go.
π Numbers 22:32β33 Β· The Angel Explains the RoadblockAfter Balaam's eyes were opened, the angel of the LORD spoke to him plainly: "Why have you struck your donkey these three times? Behold, I have come out to oppose you because your way is perverse before me."
Then he added something striking: "The donkey saw me and turned aside before me these three times. If she had not turned aside from me, surely just now I would have killed you and let her live."
The donkey saved Balaam's life three times. The thing Balaam beat for being obstinate was the thing protecting him from the consequence of his own ambition.
The obstacle was mercy. The roadblock was rescue. And Balaam was the last one to understand it.
"he bowed down and fell on his face"
When Self-Sufficiency Collapses Β· shachah Β· H7812 Β· HEBREW
To bow down, to prostrate oneself, to worship β shachah is the word used for worship throughout the Old Testament; when Balaam fell on his face, the body did what the spirit had not yet done
Balaam had been riding confidently toward Moab, hired to curse Israel, confident in his prophetic abilities. Then his eyes were opened β and he fell on his face. True encounter with God always undoes our self-sufficiency. The man who thought he could direct spiritual power for hire prostrated himself in the dirt before a messenger he had ridden past three times without seeing.
π Isaiah 6:1β5 Β· The Sight That UndoesIsaiah saw the LORD high and lifted up, and seraphim crying "holy, holy, holy." His immediate response was not wonder or delight. It was devastation: "Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips."
True sight of God β not the idea of God, not a theology of God, but the actual presence of God β consistently produces this response. The prophet who wrote for a living had no words. The man of clean reputation was suddenly aware of every way he fell short.
Balaam fell on his face the same way. Not because someone told him to. Because when God finally opened his eyes to what was in front of him, the only appropriate posture was down.
This is what encounter does. It undoes. And the undoing is the beginning of something new.
Declarations
- β¦ My spiritual credentials do not guarantee my spiritual sight β I need God to open my eyes daily. (Ephesians 1:18)
- β¦ Not every blocked path is the enemy's work β some roadblocks are God's mercy protecting me. (Numbers 22:32-33)
- β¦ True encounter with God undoes my self-sufficiency β and that undoing is the beginning of something real. (Isaiah 6:5)
- β¦ I bow before Jesus voluntarily today, in love, knowing that every knee will bow β I choose to bow first. (Philippians 2:10-11)
Prayer
Father, like Balaam, I sometimes beat the thing that is trying to protect me from a road I shouldn't be on. Open my eyes to the angel you have placed in the paths I am pursuing for the wrong reasons. Give me the honesty to see when my "calling" is really just ambition with spiritual language. And when you reveal yourself β in mercy or in holiness β let me fall on my face in worship rather than in shame. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Think about it
Is there a direction you are heading that you have been forcing β beating past obstacles and frustrations β that might actually be God standing in the road for your protection?
I will treat obstacles and frustrations as potential messages before I treat them as enemies, asking God first whether the blocked road is his mercy in disguise.
