"sitting there"
The Stillness After · kathēmai · G2521 · GREEK
To sit, to be seated in rest — a posture of peace that implies the storm has passed and calm has been fully restored
The man who had roamed the tombs day and night, cutting himself, unable to be restrained, was now sitting. Still. At the feet of Jesus. The contrast is so dramatic the text barely needs comment. The stillness was not something he produced — it was something Jesus produced in him. Sitting at Jesus's feet is the destination of every storm. The chaos had to yield to his word.
📖 Mark 4:35–41 · When Jesus Said "Peace, Be Still" to the SeaIt was evening when Jesus told the disciples to cross to the other side. In the middle of the Sea of Galilee, a furious squall came up and the waves broke over the boat. The disciples were terrified. Jesus was asleep on a cushion in the stern.
They woke him: "Teacher, don't you care if we drown?" He got up, rebuked the wind and said to the waves, "Quiet! Be still!" And the wind died. And there was a complete calm.
He turned to the disciples and asked two questions: "Why are you so afraid? Do you still have no faith?" They were more afraid after the miracle than before — they had just learned that the man asleep in the boat commanded the weather.
The one who stilled the storm on the Sea of Galilee was the same one who crossed to the other side and stilled the storm in a man. Whatever is roaring in your interior life is subject to the same voice.
"dressed"
Clothed Again · himatizō · G2439 · GREEK
To clothe, to dress — restoring the outward dignity that suffering had stripped away, a visible sign of what has happened within
The text tells us the man lived among the tombs wearing no clothes, cutting himself, crying out. When Jesus met him, he was naked, unhinged, and alone. When the townspeople arrived, he was dressed. Someone had put clothes on him. Restoration includes the return of dignity. God does not restore us internally and leave the outside a ruin. He clothes the ones he heals. The new garment is part of the miracle.
📖 Luke 15:11–24 · The Father Who Put a Robe on His Returning SonWhen the prodigal son came to his senses in the far country, he rehearsed his speech: "I am no longer worthy to be called your son; make me like one of your hired servants." He came home smelling of pigs and defeat.
His father ran to him before he finished the approach. He fell on his neck. He kissed him. And before the son could complete his rehearsed speech, the father turned to the servants: "Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and sandals on his feet."
The robe was not earned. The ring restored legal status. The sandals distinguished him from a servant. The father dressed his son back into sonship before they went inside to celebrate.
God clothes the ones he restores. He does not leave them stripped at the edge of the party. The clothing is part of the declaration: you are still mine.
"in his right mind"
The Sound Mind · sōphroneō · G4993 · GREEK
To think soundly, to be in one's right mind, to have self-control and clarity of thought — the opposite of confusion and inner chaos
The same Greek root gives us the word for "self-controlled" and "sober-minded" throughout Paul's letters. It describes a mind operating as it was designed — ordered, clear, grounded in truth. Jesus restored what the enemy had methodically dismantled. The man who had been at war inside himself was now at peace within. The mind was quiet. The thoughts were his own. This is what wholeness looks like.
📖 Romans 12:1–2 · The Renewed Mind and the Transformed LifePaul's great appeal in Romans 12 is not to try harder or do better — it is to be transformed. The instrument of transformation, he says, is the renewing of the mind. "Then you will be able to test and approve what God's will is — his good, pleasing and perfect will."
The mind is the battleground. What you believe determines how you live. The demoniac's torment expressed itself in his body, his behavior, his location — but the war was in his interior world. When Jesus spoke, the interior world reorganized.
Paul invites believers into the same kind of interior reorganization — not by willpower but by surrender to the Spirit who transforms from within. The renewed mind does not see the world the same way. It tests reality against a different standard.
The "right mind" Jesus gave the Gerasene man is available to all who surrender their thinking to the one who made the mind in the first place.
Declarations
- ✦ God has not given me a spirit of fear but of power, love, and a sound mind. (2 Timothy 1:7)
- ✦ I am clothed in the righteousness of Christ — this is my true identity, not my history. (Isaiah 61:10)
- ✦ The peace of God guards my heart and mind in Christ Jesus. (Philippians 4:7)
- ✦ I take captive every thought that opposes the knowledge of God and bring it under Christ's authority. (2 Corinthians 10:5)
Prayer
Father, you crossed to the other side of the sea just to free one man. You didn't sail past him because he was too far gone, too loud, too unclean. You got out of the boat and walked toward him. Come that way to me too. Still whatever is roaring inside me. Clothe me in your dignity. Restore my mind to its right state. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Think about it
What has been living 'among the tombs' in your interior life — the place of noise, shame, or broken thinking? What would it mean for Jesus to meet you exactly there?
I will let Jesus into the most chaotic places in my life and trust his voice to bring stillness.
