"The LORD is with you, O mighty man of valor"
Named Before Ready Β· gibbor Β· H1368 Β· HEBREW
A mighty warrior or champion; used for soldiers of great strength, valor, and courage in battle
Gideon is hiding in a winepress β the most un-military setting imaginable β when God calls him a "mighty man of valor." The contrast is almost comedic. But God names people by what they are becoming, not by what they currently appear to be. When God looks at you, He does not see your hiding place. He sees the warrior He is making. The call is not based on your track record β it is based on His intention for your life.
π Judges 6:1β18 Β· The Winepress That Became a CommissioningFor seven years the Midianites had stripped Israel bare. They came at harvest time like locusts β every crop, every animal, nothing left. The Israelites were reduced to hiding in dens and caves in the mountains, surviving on whatever scraps they could conceal. They cried out to God, and God heard them.
The answer arrived at a winepress near Ophrah, where a man named Gideon was secretly threshing wheat to hide it from the enemy. Not in a great hall, not before an army β in a hole in the ground, frightened and practical. The angel of the LORD sat down under an oak tree nearby and said something that must have sounded like a bad joke: "The LORD is with you, O mighty man of valor."
Gideon's response is deeply human. He doesn't say thank you. He doesn't stand up straighter. He asks why, if God is with them, everything has gone so terribly wrong. He questions, argues, and asks for three signs before he will believe. And God, rather than withdrawing the call because of Gideon's doubts, meets every question with patient grace.
The call did not depend on Gideon's confidence. It depended on God's intention. That is the nature of a divine summons β it does not wait for you to feel ready.
"Go in this might of yours and save Israel from the hand of Midian"
The Obedience Before the Answer Β· lech Β· H3212 Β· HEBREW
To go, walk, or travel; an imperative command to move in immediate, decisive action
God does not say "Go after I remove your fear" or "Go once you feel ready." He says, "Go in this might of yours" β which is to say, go with what you already have. The strange mercy of God's command is that it calls you to step out while the fear is still present, because obedience is what transforms fear into courage. Gideon will ask for signs, lay out fleeces, and require repeated confirmation. God gives him every sign he needs β and then says go.
π Judges 6:25β40 Β· The Fleece and the God Who Kept His PatienceThat same night God asked Gideon to do something terrifying β tear down his own father's altar to Baal and cut down the sacred Asherah pole beside it. Gideon obeyed, but at night, quietly, with ten servants, so no one would see. The fear was real enough to touch.
The next morning, the village woke to a demolished altar and demanded blood. Gideon's father, Joash, surprised everyone β he defended his son. "If Baal is a god, let him contend for himself." Gideon survived. And something shifted. He blew the trumpet, and thousands came to join him.
But doubt returned. Gideon laid out a fleece before God β wet when the ground is dry, dry when the ground is wet. God honored both requests. Not because Gideon deserved two miracles, but because God's patience with our weakness is one of the most extraordinary things about Him. He meets us in the hesitation and keeps saying: go.
"Do I not send you?"
The Sending That Authorizes Β· shalach Β· H7971 Β· HEBREW
To send, dispatch, or commission someone with a specific mission and the authority to accomplish it
The question "Do I not send you?" is the entire answer to Gideon's uncertainty. His army will be too small. His weapons will be wrong. The enemy will be overwhelming. None of it matters because the One sending him is not limited by any of those things. Being sent by God is not a credential β it is a transfer of authority that the enemy has no power to override. Gideon would learn this in the most humbling way possible: God would strip his army from thirty-two thousand down to three hundred before the battle, just to prove the point.
π Judges 7:1β22 Β· Three Hundred Trumpets Against an ArmyWhen thirty-two thousand men showed up ready to fight, God told Gideon the army was too large. The victory needed to be clearly God's, or Israel would boast in its own strength. First cut: any man who was afraid could leave. Twenty-two thousand left. Ten thousand remained.
Still too many. God sent Gideon to the water and watched how the men drank. Three hundred cupped water to their mouths with their hands, watching the horizon. The rest knelt down face-first. God took the three hundred.
With three hundred men holding torches inside clay jars and ram's horn trumpets, Gideon surrounded the Midianite camp in the middle of the night. On signal, they smashed the jars, raised the torches, blew the trumpets, and shouted "A sword for the LORD and for Gideon!" The camp erupted in confusion β the Midianites turned their swords on each other in the darkness and fled.
Three hundred torches. No swords needed. Just the sending of God made visible in the dark.

Prayer
Father, I confess I have been in the winepress β hiding what You want to harvest. Call me out with Your voice again. Speak over me the identity You see, not the limitations I feel. Let me go in the might of Your sending, with no more strength than I have right now, trusting that You are what makes the difference. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Think about it
Where is God calling you "mighty man of valor" while you are hiding in a winepress? What fear is keeping you crouching when He is asking you to stand?
I will go when God says go, trusting that the One who sends me goes ahead of me.
