"All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit." ... "And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age."

"All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me"
The Ground Beneath the Mission Β· exousia Β· G1849 Β· GREEK
Authority, power to act β the delegated right and capability to do something; Jesus establishes this first because the commission rests entirely on it
Jesus does not begin the Great Commission with a command. He begins with a declaration: all authority has been given to me. The commission flows from the authority β and if the authority is complete, then the mission is backed by everything that exists. The disciples are not going out on their own strength or their own credibility. They go as representatives of the one who holds all authority in both realms.
π Matthew 28:16β20 Β· On a Hillside in GalileeThe eleven remaining disciples go to a mountain in Galilee, as Jesus had told them. When they see him, they worship β but Matthew is honest: some doubted. This is where the Great Commission is given. Not to a crowd of certainty, but to a small group of people still wrestling with what they've seen.
And to this group β imperfect, still-processing, some of them wavering β Jesus gives the biggest assignment in human history: go make disciples of every nation on earth.
But first, he grounds it. All authority has been given to me. He is not sending them in their own names or by their own power. The authority of heaven and earth stands behind every step they take. The mission is impossible for them. It is not impossible for him.
The disciples who went from this hillside turned the world. Not because of their competence β but because of whose authority they carried.
"make disciples of all nations"
The Whole-Life Transfer Β· mathΔteuΕ Β· G3100 Β· GREEK
To disciple, to make a learner β to bring someone into a sustained relationship of teaching, imitation, and formation; more than conversion, it is formation
"Make disciples" is a single imperative in the Greek β everything else (going, baptizing, teaching) is participial, describing how it is done. The core command is formation, not just evangelism. A disciple is someone whose entire life is being shaped by the teacher β and that kind of formation is exactly what Jesus commissioned his followers to pass on. Disciples make disciples. The process is deeply personal and deeply relational.
π Mark 3:13β15 Β· He Appointed Twelve β That They Might Be with HimMark says something quietly stunning about why Jesus appointed the twelve disciples: "that they might be with him and that he might send them out to preach." Being with him comes first. Sending comes second. Disciples are made through proximity before they are made through mission.
For three years, the twelve watched how Jesus prayed, how he responded to the sick, how he handled the hostile, what he did with power, how he treated the marginalized. They absorbed a way of life before they were commissioned to pass it on.
This is what "make disciples" means. Not a transfer of information β a transfer of life. Not a course to complete but a person to follow. Not a set of beliefs to adopt but a way of being in the world to inhabit.
Jesus made disciples by letting them be with him. And he asks his disciples to do the same β to bring others into the kind of formation that comes from sustained proximity to the teaching, the life, and the Spirit of Christ.
"I am with you always, to the very end of the age"
The Promise That Never Expires Β· synagΕ Β· G4862 + aiΓ³n Β· G165
Always β all the days, every day without exception; to the end of the age β the full span of human history until its close; a promise without gaps or termination
The Great Commission ends not with a challenge but with a promise. Jesus does not say "go, and I hope it works out." He says "I am with you β every day β until the age itself ends." The presence of Christ is not the reward for completing the mission; it is the power that makes the mission possible. The disciples go into a world that will resist and reject them β and they go with the one who holds all authority already accompanying them.
π Acts 18:9β11 Β· Do Not Be Afraid β I Am with YouPaul is in Corinth, facing opposition. The community is hostile. He has already been rejected in other cities. And one night, Jesus speaks to him in a vision: "Do not be afraid; keep on speaking, do not be silent. For I am with you, and no one is going to attack and harm you, because I have many people in this city."
The promise "I am with you" is the personal fulfillment of what Jesus declared at the end of Matthew. It is not abstract. It is "I am with you" in this city, in this moment, in this specific opposition.
Paul stays in Corinth for a year and a half. The Corinthian church is planted. It is one of the most complex and troubled churches in the New Testament β and also one of the most significant. The promise held.
The presence of Jesus with his disciples is not a comforting idea β it is an operative reality. He is there. In the cities, in the resistance, in the discouragement, in the long season of planting before any harvest appears.
Declarations
- β¦ I go under the authority of the risen Christ β all authority in heaven and on earth backs the steps I take. (Matthew 28:18)
- β¦ I am called to make disciples β not just converts β through the life I share and the truth I live. (Matthew 28:19)
- β¦ Jesus is with me always β in the easy seasons and the hard ones, to the very end of the age. (Matthew 28:20)
- β¦ The mission does not rest on my strength β it runs on the power of the Holy Spirit within me. (Acts 1:8)
Prayer
Father, I receive the Great Commission as addressed to me β not as a guilt-laden obligation but as an invitation to carry what I have been given into the lives of those around me. I cannot do this in my own strength. But the authority is yours, and you promise to be with me always. Teach me what it means to make disciples in the everyday moments of my life. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Think about it
Who in your life right now is God inviting you to intentionally invest in β and what would it look like to walk alongside them in formation rather than just information?
I will go β into my neighborhood, my workplace, my relationships β carrying the authority of Christ and trusting his presence with every step.
