"Then Amos answered and said to Amaziah, 'I was no prophet, nor a prophet's son, but I was a herdsman and a dresser of sycamore figs. But the LORD took me from following the flock, and the LORD said to me, "Go, prophesy to my people Israel."'"

"I was no prophet, nor a prophet's son"
The One Nobody Picked Β· nabi Β· H5030 Β· HEBREW
A prophet β one who speaks for God, an authorized spokesperson of the divine β often translated as a foreteller, but more accurately a forth-teller of God's word
Amos says the quiet part out loud: I did not attend the prophets's school. My father was not in the guild. I was a farmer who kept livestock and pruned sycamore trees. Nobody would have picked me for this. God did not look for the most prepared candidate β He looked for the one He could take. The qualification Amos had was not a credential. It was availability. And that is still what God is looking for.
π Exodus 3:1β12 Β· The Man Who Said Not MeMoses was tending sheep in the wilderness β forty years removed from Egypt, from palace life, from anything resembling influence β when the burning bush appeared. He turned aside to look. That turn was the beginning of everything.
When God spoke and told him to go back to Egypt to lead Israel out, Moses began his resume of disqualifications. "Who am I that I should go?" He didn't know how to speak. He didn't have a name to give when Israel asked who sent him. He was certain they wouldn't listen. He asked God to send someone else.
God answered every objection with the same basic truth: I will be with you. The question was never Moses' qualification β it was God's presence. What made Moses adequate was not Moses. It was the One who was sending him.
Amos stood in the same tradition. Not a prophet. Not from prophet stock. Just a man with a word from God and a God who was sending him. That was enough.
"the LORD took me"
Seized for a Purpose Β· laqach Β· H3947 Β· HEBREW
To take, to take hold of, to receive β often used of God's active seizure of a person for His purposes; implies initiative, authority, and movement from the outside in
Amos did not volunteer. He was taken. The word laqach β the LORD took me β carries the sense of God's hand reaching into an ordinary life and pulling someone out of it for an appointed purpose. Amos was not seeking a calling. He was in a field, tending animals. The most transformative divine appointments are rarely the ones we applied for. God's taking is always intentional. He knew what He was doing when He reached into your field.
π Isaiah 6:1β8 Β· The Taking That Begins With a VisionIsaiah was not looking for an assignment. He was in the temple β mourning, perhaps, or simply worshipping β when the vision broke open. The LORD sat on a throne, high and lifted up. The seraphim covered their faces and cried Holy, Holy, Holy. The doorposts shook. The house filled with smoke.
Isaiah's response was not readiness. It was ruin: "Woe is me! For I am lost; for I am a man of unclean lips, and I dwell in the midst of a people of unclean lips." The encounter with holiness did not make him feel prepared β it made him feel undone.
But then the seraph flew to him with a coal from the altar. "Your guilt is taken away, and your sin atoned for." The taking came before the sending. The purification came before the commission.
And then God said: "Whom shall I send, and who will go for us?" And Isaiah, taken and cleansed, said: "Here am I! Send me." The LORD took him β and Isaiah let himself be taken.
"Go, prophesy to my people Israel"
The Fire That Must Speak Β· naba Β· H5012 Β· HEBREW
To prophesy β to speak under divine compulsion, to pour forth inspired speech; to be so filled with God's word that it comes out whether or not conditions seem favorable
God did not ask Amos for a strategy or a readiness assessment. He gave a direction and a people: go, and here is who you are going to. The prophesying God calls for is less a performance than a compulsion β speaking because the word is inside you and it has to come out. Every believer carries something to say on God's behalf, even if the audience is one and the venue is an ordinary Tuesday. The question is not whether you are qualified. The question is whether you will go.
π Jeremiah 20:7β9 Β· The Fire He Could Not Hold InJeremiah had a complicated relationship with his call. He complained about it openly. He accused God of deceiving him. He said he had become a laughingstock because of the word he carried, because everyone he spoke to mocked him.
He tried to quit. He decided he would not mention God anymore, would not speak in His name. He made the decision and tried to stick to it.
Then he describes what happened next: it was in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones. And I was weary with holding it in. And I could not.
The word of God inside Jeremiah was not a skill he deployed. It was a fire he contained β until he couldn't. The prophesying God calls for is not optional equipment. It is a fire that eventually, inevitably, must speak.
Declarations
- β¦ My lack of credentials does not disqualify me β God chooses what is foolish to shame the wise. (1 Corinthians 1:27)
- β¦ God took me on purpose and for a purpose β the initiative was His and it has not been withdrawn. (Amos 7:15)
- β¦ I am a chosen instrument of God, appointed to carry His name to the people around me. (Acts 9:15)
- β¦ I will go when God says go β because the word inside me is not mine to contain. (Jeremiah 20:9)
Prayer
Father, I am more like Amos than I want to admit β ordinary, unqualified by the standards that seem to matter, often found in the field doing the everyday things. And yet you take people like this and send them. Take me. Send me. Not when I feel ready, not when I have the right credentials β but now, as I am, to the people you have already appointed. Give me the word that needs to come out. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Think about it
What is the "I was no prophet" statement you make about yourself β and what would it mean to let God answer that objection the way He answered Amos?
I will stop waiting for the burning bush and start paying attention to what is already burning in me.
