"Then he went down to Nazareth with them and was obedient to them. But his mother treasured all these things in her heart. And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man."

"was obedient to them"
Choosing to Be Under Β· hypotasso Β· G5293 Β· GREEK
To arrange oneself under another, to willingly subordinate β not forced submission but chosen deference
Luke is reporting something stunning: the eternal Son of God chose to be under the authority of a carpenter and his wife. This was not a theological technicality β it was thirty years of daily submission: coming home when called, learning what Joseph taught, helping in the shop. The one who holds the universe together also handed his father a board when Joseph needed it. Obedience is not diminishment. It is the shape love often takes.
π Luke 2:41β52 Β· The Lost Boy Who Was Never LostWhen Jesus was twelve, the family made the annual pilgrimage to Jerusalem for Passover. On the way home, Mary and Joseph discovered the boy was missing. They searched for three days before finding him in the temple courts, sitting with teachers, asking and answering questions that astonished everyone who heard him.
Mary's response was immediate and maternal: "Son, why have you treated us like this? Your father and I have been anxiously searching for you." Jesus' answer was gentle but revealing: "Didn't you know I had to be in my Father's house?"
But then β and this is the part that matters β he went home with them. To Nazareth. To the carpenter's shop. To thirty more years of ordinary life under the roof of an ordinary family.
The one who knew who he truly was still chose to come home, be obedient, and let his parents worry about him like any mother and father would. He was in no hurry to escape the smallness of family life. This, too, was his Father's house.
"grew in wisdom and stature"
The Progress That Is Sacred Β· prokopo Β· G4298 Β· GREEK
To advance, to cut forward, to make progress β a word used for the forward movement of an army blazing a trail
Luke says Jesus grew. Not pretended to grow. Grew. The incarnation means that the Son of God entered the full experience of being human β including the slow, ordinary, daily process of learning and developing. A carpenter's apprentice, a synagogue student, a child who grew taller every year. Growth is not a sign that something is incomplete β it is the mark of something fully alive. And Joseph was there for all of it.
π Luke 2:52 Β· The Apprentice in the Carpenter's ShopWe know almost nothing about the years between the temple visit at twelve and the baptism at thirty. What we do know is that Jesus grew. He grew in wisdom β the ability to navigate life with discernment and grace. He grew in stature β his body did what bodies do.
In those hidden years, Joseph taught his son the trade. How to select wood that would hold. How to join two pieces so they would not separate under pressure. How to measure twice. How to work carefully with your hands.
It is not hard to imagine Jesus preaching years later about building houses on rock versus sand, or about a father giving good gifts to his children, or about the kingdom being like a net drawn in β and behind every image, the quiet influence of a man who shaped wood and shaped a boy.
Joseph's greatest legacy is not what he built with his hands β it is the one he raised in his home. The best thing he ever made was the environment in which the Savior of the world grew up.
"God and man"
Both Dimensions, Together Β· anthropos Β· G444 Β· GREEK
A human being β the word Jesus chose in reference to man, contrasted here with God to show Jesus flourished in both directions at once
Luke says Jesus grew in favor with God and man β both dimensions simultaneously. He was not holy at the expense of being relatable, or popular at the expense of being righteous. In Nazareth, under Joseph's roof, the Son of God demonstrated that being fully devoted to God does not make you less human β it makes you more fully human. The integrated life Joseph helped shape was not divided between sacred and secular. All of it was offered to both God and neighbor.
π Luke 2:52 Β· The Life That Did Not Have to ChooseThe typical expectation is that you have to choose: be holy or be liked. Pursue God or pursue community. The sacred or the ordinary. Jesus in Nazareth refused that false split.
He grew in favor with God β his devotion, his prayer, his understanding of the Torah were real and deepening. And simultaneously, he grew in favor with people β he was someone others wanted to be around, trusted, enjoyed, and respected.
Joseph and Mary raised a child who was good at being human because he was fully given to God. The workshop, the synagogue, the family table, the road to Jerusalem β nothing was off-limits from God's presence or from human warmth.
This is the wholeness Jesus calls us into. Not compartmentalization β not God in one box and everything else in another β but a life where love for God and love for people are so intertwined that you cannot separate them without destroying both.
Declarations
- β¦ I am growing β in wisdom, in faith, and in love β and growth is God's design for me. (Luke 2:52)
- β¦ My faithfulness in hidden, ordinary seasons is preparing something I cannot yet see. (Luke 16:10)
- β¦ I pursue God and people together β the two are inseparable in the life I am called to. (Matthew 22:37β39)
- β¦ Every part of my life β work, family, rest β can be offered to God and lived for others. (Colossians 3:17)
Prayer
Father, Joseph shaped an environment where your Son could grow. Help me to be a person β a parent, a mentor, a friend β who creates that kind of space for others. And where I am the one still growing, give me the humility of the twelve-year-old who went home to Nazareth and kept learning. Let me grow in both directions β deeper with you, and warmer toward the people around me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Think about it
In what areas of your life are you still growing β and what would it look like to submit to that process instead of resisting it?
I will be faithful in the hidden seasons, trusting that what God builds in secret is never wasted.
