"you are anxious and troubled about many things"
The Divided Mind Β· merimnao Β· G3309 Β· GREEK
To be pulled apart by worry, to have one's attention scattered across multiple concerns until no single thing can be fully attended to
Martha's anxiety wasn't imaginary β the meals needed cooking, guests needed welcoming, and her sister had disappeared into the other room. But Jesus named something beneath the busyness: a mind that had stopped resting in his presence. Anxiety tells us that the outcome depends entirely on us. Martha's distraction was both practical and spiritual, and Jesus addressed both with two words and a gentle redirect. The invitation is not to do less β it is to do everything from a centered, unhurried place.
π John 14:1β6 Β· The Night Jesus Spoke to Troubled HeartsOn the night of his arrest, Jesus gathered with twelve men who had just learned he was leaving. The table was heavy with unspoken fear. They did not understand what was about to happen, but they understood enough to know it was going to be terrible.
Jesus looked at them and said, "Let not your hearts be troubled." Not: stop having feelings. Not: pretend it isn't hard. But: do not let the trouble settle in and own you. There is a difference between trouble that passes through and trouble that takes up residence.
He did not dismiss their anxiety β he addressed it directly by pointing them to something larger: "You believe in God; believe also in me." Anxiety asks, who is in control? Faith answers that question with a person.
Martha's anxiety in the kitchen was the same question the disciples faced in the upper room: is there anyone in charge of what happens next? Jesus answered it the same way both times β by pointing to himself.
"one thing is necessary"
The Only Non-Negotiable Β· heis Β· G1520 Β· GREEK
Numerical oneness, but also singularity in priority β the single indispensable thing, the one without which all other things lack their foundation
Jesus didn't say everything else was unimportant. He said one thing was necessary β which changes the math entirely. When you know what the one essential is, everything else finds its proper place beneath it. The problem wasn't that Martha had many things to do; it was that none of them were ordered beneath the one thing that gave them meaning. Presence with Jesus is not the reward you get after the work is done β it is the thing that makes the work worth doing.
π Psalm 27:1β4 Β· The One Thing David Kept Asking ForDavid wrote Psalm 27 in a season of serious threat. Enemies encamped around him. The noise of warfare competed for every thought. By every earthly measure, he had dozens of urgent problems demanding his attention.
In the middle of it all, he made one of the most focused declarations in Scripture: "One thing have I asked of the LORD, that will I seek after β that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to inquire in his temple."
Not victory. Not safety. Not vindication. One thing: presence with God. David had learned something Martha was still learning: when you narrow everything to the one thing, you don't lose the rest β you find the source from which the rest can be handled.
The "one thing" Jesus said was necessary and the one thing David spent his life seeking are the same: the face of God. Everything else flows from there.
"Mary has chosen the good portion"
The Better Choice Β· agathos Β· G18 Β· GREEK
Good in a complete sense β not merely pleasant, but genuinely beneficial and excellent in the deepest moral and spiritual sense; truly good rather than only apparently good
Mary's choice was not laziness or avoidance of her responsibilities. It was discernment β a recognition that this moment, with this teacher, was not ordinary. She chose the portion that no one could take from her β not Pharisees, not busyness, not even death. What we choose to sit with shapes everything else we do. Mary chose the source of the very good that her sister was working so hard to produce.
π John 12:1β8 Β· The Extravagant Thing No One ExpectedSix days before Passover, Jesus came back to Bethany β to the same home where Martha had been in the kitchen and Mary had been at his feet. Martha served dinner again. Lazarus reclined at the table. And Mary took a pound of expensive ointment, knelt down, and poured it over Jesus' feet.
The room went completely silent. Judas called it waste β three hundred denarii, a year's wages, gone. The fragrance filled the house. Jesus called it beautiful. He said she had anointed him for burial, even if she didn't yet understand what that meant.
Mary had always known something her sister was still learning: time with Jesus is not time wasted. Meals can be remade tomorrow. The jar of ointment, once poured, cannot be reclaimed β but neither can this moment, with this person, before everything changed.
She chose the good portion again. And again, no one could take it from her.
Declarations
- β¦ I am not defined by what I produce for God but by what I receive from him. (Luke 10:42)
- β¦ I bring my anxieties to God instead of letting them drive me from task to task. (Philippians 4:6)
- β¦ I seek first the kingdom, trusting that everything else will follow in its right order. (Matthew 6:33)
- β¦ I can work with peace because I abide in the one who is my source and sustainer. (John 15:5)
Prayer
Father, I have so many things β tasks and worries and responsibilities I cannot seem to release. I come to you distracted and spread thin, and I ask you to do what I cannot do for myself: quiet the noise long enough for me to hear you say my name. I want to choose the better thing β not because the work doesn't matter, but because I know I cannot do it well without first sitting with you. Order my life from your presence outward, not from my performance inward. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Think about it
What is the "many things" that has been crowding out the "one thing" in your life this season β and what would one hour of intentional stillness before God actually cost you?
I will choose the good portion first β before the tasks, before the worries, before the expectations β and let everything else be ordered from that place.
