And a woman was there who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years. She had suffered a great deal under the care of many doctors and had spent all she had, yet instead of getting better she grew worse. When she heard about Jesus, she came up behind him in the crowd and touched his cloak, because she thought, "If I just touch his clothes, I will be healed." Immediately her bleeding stopped and she felt in her body that she was freed from her suffering. At once Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and asked, "Who touched my clothes?" "You see the people crowding against you," his disciples answered, "and yet you can ask, 'Who touched me?'" But Jesus kept looking around to see who had done it. Then the woman, knowing what had happened to her, came and fell at his feet and, trembling with fear, told him the whole truth. He said to her, "Daughter, your faith has healed you." "Go in peace and be freed from your suffering."

"power had gone out from him"
The Inexhaustible Source Β· dynamis Β· G1411 Β· GREEK
Dynamis means power, might, or miraculous ability β the same word used for the Holy Spirit's power at Pentecost. That this power "went out from him" reveals Jesus as a living reservoir of divine energy that flows toward the suffering without depletion.
The crowd pressed against Jesus, but only one touch released healing. Power flows from Jesus not because of proximity but because of faith-filled reaching. Twelve years of suffering, spent resources, ceremonial uncleanness β none of it stopped the power. Jesus is not a finite reservoir; he is the inexhaustible source of divine dunamis.
π Mark 5:25β34 Β· The Touch That Released PowerShe has counted the years. Twelve of them. Twelve years of bleeding that made her ritually unclean, cut off from the temple, unable to be touched without making others unclean too. She has tried every doctor, spent every coin, and only gotten worse. She is desperate, invisible, and running out of time.
Then she hears about Jesus. Not a rumor β reports. People healed. Power witnessed. And something stirs in her that has been dormant for years: hope. She doesn't ask for an appointment. She slips into the crowd pressing against Jesus and tells herself, "If I just touch his clothes β just the hem β I will be healed."
She reaches. Her fingers brush the edge of his cloak. And immediately β Mark uses that word like a drumbeat β her bleeding stops. She knows it. After twelve years she knows what her body feels like, and this is different. She is healed.
And then Jesus stops. "Who touched my clothes?" The disciples think he's joking β the crowd is a crush of bodies. But Jesus keeps looking. He felt something: power had gone out from him. And when the woman steps forward trembling, he doesn't rebuke her. He names her. "Daughter," he says. Not unclean woman. Not sinner. Daughter.
"Daughter, your faith has healed you"
The Name That Restores Β· thygater Β· G2364 Β· GREEK
Thygater means daughter β a word of family belonging, tenderness, and covenant identity. In a culture where this woman's condition made her an outcast, Jesus uses a term of intimacy and kinship. He doesn't just heal her body; he restores her identity as a daughter.
The woman came hoping for physical healing and received something more: Jesus named her Daughter β restoring what twelve years of suffering had stripped away: belonging, dignity, and a place in God's family. He didn't call her "healed woman." He called her Daughter β and with that word, she was more than healed. She was claimed.
π Mark 5:25β34 Β· Trembling Before TendernessShe expected to be scolded. She had made people unclean by her touch for twelve years β that was the law. She had slipped through the crowd hoping no one would notice. But Jesus noticed. And now he is asking who touched him, and the crowd is watching, and she has nowhere to hide.
She steps forward. Mark says she is "trembling with fear." She falls at his feet. And she tells him "the whole truth" β not a polished explanation, but everything: the twelve years, the doctors, the money, the desperation, the hope, the touch. Everything.
He could have said "You're healed, go on your way." He could have addressed the crowd and moved on to Jairus's urgent errand. Instead, he stops. He looks at her. And he says one word before anything else: Daughter.
It lands like an embrace. In that one word, twelve years of isolation collapse. She is not unclean. She is not a burden. She is not a case. She is a daughter β of God, through Jesus β and her faith, which trembled and reached and hoped, has healed her. Not just her body. Her.
"Go in peace and be freed from your suffering"
Shalom Made Flesh Β· eirΔnΔ Β· G1515 Β· GREEK
EirΔnΔ is the Greek equivalent of Hebrew shalom β not merely the absence of conflict but comprehensive wholeness, well-being, and right-standing with God. When Jesus says "go in peace," he is pronouncing over her the fullness of God's shalom: spiritual, relational, and physical restoration all at once.
Jesus does not just stop the bleeding β he speaks shalom over her entire life. "Be freed from your suffering" translates a Greek word meaning to be released from a grip. She was gripped by illness for twelve years. Jesus speaks, and the grip breaks. EirΔnΔ is what she walks into β not just the absence of disease, but the fullness of restored life.
π Mark 5:25β34 Β· Sent Into WholenessShe came in secret. She leaves sent. That is the difference Jesus makes in this story.
She had slipped through the crowd hoping to receive something and disappear. But Jesus won't let her disappear. He calls her out β not to shame her, but because what he gives her is not just a physical event. It is a sending. "Go," he says. That one word changes everything about her posture in the world.
Before this moment, she was shrinking. Twelve years of being ceremonially unclean had trained her to make herself small, to avoid contact, to expect rejection. She touched Jesus from behind because she couldn't imagine approaching him face to face. But Jesus gives her a new direction: Go. Into life. Into community. Into the world. With peace.
And "be freed from your suffering" β that phrase carries the force of a legal declaration. The grip that held her for twelve years is released. Not just managed, not just paused β released. She is free. And the peace Jesus gives her is not a feeling; it is a new reality. She walks into it whole.
Declarations
- β¦ Jesus is the inexhaustible source of divine power β he is never depleted when I reach for him.
- β¦ Because Jesus called her Daughter, I know he calls me his own β I am not an outcast, I am claimed.
- β¦ Jesus speaks shalom over my life β the wholeness he gives is deeper than the absence of pain.
- β¦ Because of Jesus, the grip of suffering on my life is released β I am freed, not just managed.
- β¦ Jesus notices every faith-filled reach β even the hidden, trembling ones β and turns toward me.
Prayer
Jesus, you felt the touch of someone who had no right to approach you β and you turned toward her. I come to you now, not from behind the crowd but face to face, trembling just like her. I don't know how long I've been carrying what I carry, but you felt power go out when she reached, and I believe you feel every faith-filled reach. I reach for you now. Let your power flow β not just to stop what hurts, but to name me the way you named her. Call me yours. Speak Daughter or Son over me and let me receive it. And send me out the way you sent her β not just healed but whole, not just restored but commissioned. Let your eirΔnΔ settle over me like a declaration, not a feeling. I don't want the peace the world gives. I want yours β the peace that guards my heart when I cannot understand what you are doing. Into your hands I release the grip that suffering has had on me. I receive freedom. I go in peace. Amen.
Think about it
In what area of your life have you been reaching for Jesus from behind β hoping to receive quietly without being seen β and what might change if you allowed him to turn toward you and call you by name?
