Jesus answered him, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God." Nicodemus said to him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother's womb and be born?" Jesus answered, "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter the kingdom of God. That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit." "Do not marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born again.' The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit."

"unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom"
From Above / Again Β· anΕthen Β· G509 Β· GREEK
anΕthen carries a deliberate double meaning: it can mean "again" (a second time) or "from above" (from heaven). Nicodemus hears "again." Jesus means "from above." The new birth is not a repeat of the first birth β it is a birth of divine origin, life descending from God himself into the human soul.
Jesus does not say Nicodemus needs to improve himself, learn more, or try harder. He says he needs to be born again β anΕthen β from above. The new birth is not a religious upgrade; it is a new origin. Just as a person cannot choose or achieve their first birth, they cannot manufacture their second. It comes from above, from God, by his initiative. And without it, even the most educated and religious person cannot see the kingdom.
π John 3:1β10 Β· The Night VisitorHe comes at night. This detail is not incidental. Nicodemus is a Pharisee β a member of the ruling council, a man of significant standing and meticulous religious observance. Coming to Jesus in daylight would cost him socially. So he comes after dark, slipping through Jerusalem's streets to find the one who has been causing such a stir.
He opens well: "Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God, for no one can do these signs that you do unless God is with him." It is a compliment, an opener, a polite acknowledgment β the kind of thing one learned man says to another before getting to the real questions.
Jesus does not return the pleasantry. He cuts straight to what Nicodemus actually needs: "Truly, truly, I say to you, unless one is born again he cannot see the kingdom of God." No preamble. No academic exchange. Jesus diagnoses the man's condition before he has even asked a question.
Nicodemus is bewildered. He is not stupid β he is a teacher of Israel, thoroughly versed in Torah and tradition. But what Jesus is describing has no category in his education. You cannot reverse-engineer a birth. You cannot will yourself into a new existence. "How can a man be born when he is old?" he asks. It is not a dull question β it is the right question. And Jesus's answer will reshape everything Nicodemus thought he knew.
"born of water and the Spirit"
Breath / Wind / Spirit Β· pneuma Β· G4151 Β· GREEK
pneuma carries all three meanings simultaneously β breath, wind, spirit. It is the same word used in the Septuagint for the Spirit of God hovering over the waters at creation (Genesis 1:2). The new birth is a new act of creation: God's Spirit breathing new life into a human soul.
"Water and Spirit" has been interpreted variously β baptismal water, the water of physical birth, the cleansing of the Word. Most powerfully, it echoes Ezekiel 36:25β27, where God promises to sprinkle clean water on his people and put his Spirit within them. The new birth is a work of divine cleansing and divine enlivening β both are the Spirit's work. The flesh produces only flesh; to enter the kingdom requires the Spirit of God making something entirely new.
π Ezekiel 37:1β10 Β· The Valley of Dry BonesLong before Nicodemus came to Jesus by night, the prophet Ezekiel stood in a valley full of bones. The bones were dry β very dry. The scene is desolation: a vast army destroyed, every particle of life gone, nothing left but the bleached remains of what was once living.
God asks Ezekiel: "Can these bones live?" A lesser man would have said no. Ezekiel says, "O Lord God, you know." Then God commands him to prophesy to the bones, and Ezekiel does β and the bones begin to rattle. Sinew appears. Flesh covers them. Skin stretches over them. But they lie still. No breath.
Then God says, "Prophesy to the breath, prophesy, son of man, and say to the breath: Come from the four winds, O breath, and breathe on these slain, that they may live." Ezekiel prophesies, and the breath β the ruach, the Spirit β enters them. And they stand, a vast living army, where there had been only bones.
This is the image behind Jesus's words to Nicodemus: "That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit." Without the Spirit, the most religious human being is a well-dressed collection of dry bones. When the Spirit of God breathes new life, a new creature stands up β born from above, alive in a way that no human effort could ever produce.
"The wind blows where it wishes... so it is with everyone born of the Spirit"
The Sovereign Breath Β· pneuma Β· G4151 Β· GREEK / ruach Β· H7307 Β· HEBREW
Both the Greek pneuma and the Hebrew ruach mean wind, breath, and spirit simultaneously β the same word carries all three. The Spirit is like wind: sovereign in direction, real in effect, invisible to the eye but unmistakable in consequence. His movements cannot be controlled or predicted; they can only be received.
Jesus describes the Spirit's work with an image that would unsettle any religious system: wind. You cannot predict where the wind will blow, you cannot control it, you cannot manufacture it β and you cannot deny the evidence when it has passed through. The Spirit of God is sovereignly free. The new birth is his work, not ours. And the fruit of that birth β the changed life β is as undeniable as a tree bent in a gale.
π Acts 2:1β4 Β· The Day the Wind Filled the RoomThe disciples are gathered in Jerusalem β 120 of them, ten days after the Ascension, waiting for the promise Jesus made before he left. The city is full of pilgrims for the Feast of Pentecost. The disciples pray. They wait. They cannot predict what will happen or when.
Then it comes. Suddenly. "A sound like a mighty rushing wind" β not actual wind, but a sound like it β fills the entire house. And tongues of fire appear and rest on each of them. And they are all filled with the Holy Spirit.
They spill into the streets. The crowd that gathers is bewildered: pilgrims from every nation in the Roman world hear the disciples speaking in their own languages. Peter stands up and preaches β the same Peter who denied Jesus three times a few weeks before. Three thousand people are baptized that day.
The wind blew where it wished. No one in that upper room decided when it would arrive, what form it would take, or who it would rest on. They waited for it. They received it. And the effect β three thousand new births in a single day β was impossible to deny.
This is what Jesus promised Nicodemus: the Spirit moves sovereignly, freely, beyond human control. And when he moves, the evidence is undeniable.

Prayer
Jesus, you sat with Nicodemus in the dark and told him the most important thing he had never heard: he needed to be born again. I need to hear that too. I thank you that my new birth did not depend on my intelligence or my religious performance β it came from above, from the Spirit who blew through my life like a wind I could not predict or control. Thank you for opening my heart before I even knew enough to ask. Lord, I want to live as someone truly born again β not going back to flesh and performance, but walking in the life the Spirit has breathed into me. When I drift toward trying to earn what you have already given, remind me: this life is a gift. When I grow uncertain whether the new birth is real, show me the fruit β the love, the longing for you, the changes I could not have manufactured myself. And Spirit, blow where you wish β in my life, in the lives of the people I love. Do what only you can do. I receive the life you have given from above, and I give it back to you today. Amen.
Think about it
How has the new birth β being born of the Spirit β changed who you are in a way that no religious effort could have produced on its own?
