"A friend loves at all times"
The Love That Doesn't Check the Weather Β· ahab Β· H157 Β· HEBREW
To love β a love that is chosen, consistent, and not conditioned on circumstances or on the other person's performance
The word ahab in Hebrew describes an active, chosen love β not a feeling that comes and goes but a decision made repeatedly. The verse doesn't say a friend loves in the easy seasons. It says at all times. True friendship is not a fair-weather arrangement; it is a covenant sealed in the ordinary moments and proven in the hard ones. Who in your life loves you at all times β and are you that person for someone else?
π 1 Samuel 18:1β4 Β· The Prince Who Took Off His Armor for a Shepherd BoyJonathan was a prince. He had everything β lineage, status, a future on the throne. David was a shepherd who had just walked in from the fields holding a severed giant's head. And somehow, in that moment, their souls were knit together.
Jonathan initiated. He gave David his own robe, his tunic, his sword, his bow, his belt. This wasn't a small gesture β this was Jonathan saying: everything I have, I share with you. My status is your status. My story is your story now.
What makes this friendship remarkable is that Jonathan had the most to lose by loving David. If David ascended to the throne as God had anointed him, Jonathan would not be king. And Jonathan didn't care. The love was louder than the politics.
This is what it looks like when someone loves at all times β even when the timing costs them something significant.
"a brother is born"
Born Into Your Story Β· yalad Β· H3205 Β· HEBREW
To be born, to bring forth β here suggesting that some friendships are not accidental but as intentional as a birth ordered by God
The image here is striking β a brother is born. Not found, not chosen, not stumbled upon. Born. As if God labored over the giving of this person to your life the way a mother labors in delivery. Some of the people in your life are not coincidences β they are assignments, placed beside you with the same intentionality God puts into every birth. Which relationship in your life might be more than luck?
π Ruth 1:14β17 Β· Where You Go, I Will GoNaomi told both daughters-in-law to go back to their own people. Orpah wept and left β a natural, understandable choice. But Ruth clung to Naomi with words that have echoed through centuries.
"Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there I will be buried."
Ruth had no obligation. Naomi was old, bitter, and returning to a country Ruth had no connection to. There was no strategic reason for this friendship. No social benefit. No safety net on the other end of it.
Ruth went anyway. Because some people are born into your story not by biology but by covenant β and when they find you, they stay.
"a time of adversity"
The Revealing Season Β· tsarah Β· H6869 Β· HEBREW
Adversity, distress, narrow straits β a time of pressure that reveals the true nature of every relationship and every person
Adversity is the revealer. It shows you who is actually in your corner and who was only in your orbit. The Hebrew word tsarah means something like narrow straits β a tight place, a confined space where there's no room for casual acquaintances. Some friendships look strong until adversity shows up β and then the ones who were born for this moment step forward while others step back. Who has stayed when things got tight?
π Job 2:11β13 Β· The Friends Who Sat in the Ash HeapJob had lost everything. His children were gone. His body was covered in sores. He sat in the ash heap scraping at himself with broken pottery. The universe felt silent and indifferent.
Then three friends came. Eliphaz, Bildad, and Zophar. They came from three different directions. When they saw Job from a distance, they didn't recognize him. They wept. They tore their robes. They threw dust on their heads.
And then β before any of them said a single word β they sat with him. For seven days and seven nights, they sat on the ground in silence. Because the suffering was too great for words.
They would later say all the wrong things. Their theology would miss the point. But in those first seven days, they did exactly what a brother born for adversity does: they showed up and they stayed.
Declarations
- β¦ I am not alone; God has placed people in my life to carry me and to carry with me. (Ecclesiastes 4:9β10)
- β¦ I am befriended by Jesus himself β he calls me friend, not servant. (John 15:15)
- β¦ I will love at all times β consistent, chosen, unconditional β because I have been loved that way. (Proverbs 17:17)
- β¦ I will carry the burdens of those I love, fulfilling the law of Christ in the way I show up. (Galatians 6:2)
Prayer
Father, thank you for the people you have placed in my life β the ones who stay, the ones who showed up in the hard seasons, the ones I may not have recognized as gifts until I needed them. Teach me to be the kind of friend I want to have. Show me anyone I have overlooked, anyone who needed me and I was too busy or too distracted to notice. And where I have felt alone, remind me that you are the friend who sticks closer than a brother. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Think about it
Who has been a "brother born for adversity" in your life β and have you told them what their friendship has meant to you?
I will be the kind of friend who shows up, stays present, and loves at all times β not just when it is convenient.
