"to all who did receive him"
The Open Hand Β· lambanΕ Β· G2983 Β· GREEK
To take hold of, receive, or accept something being offered β an active but receptive act, not one of merit or earning
The word "receive" carries a simple but radical weight. You do not generate faith on your own β you receive the One who has already come to you. Becoming a Christian is less like climbing a mountain and more like opening a door someone is already knocking on. If you are new to faith, know that the searching you have been doing is not you finding God β it is you noticing that God has been near you all along, and turning toward Him.
π John 1:1β18 Β· Light Entering a World That Did Not Know HimJohn's Gospel opens with a poem β a theological declaration so compact and so vast it has occupied scholars for centuries. In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. And then the most astonishing turn in all of literature: the Word became flesh and moved into the neighborhood.
The eternal God, unlimited and uncreated, became a baby in Bethlehem. He walked dusty roads and ate fish with fishermen. He touched lepers who had not felt human contact in years. He came to what was His own, and His own people did not receive Him. Not everyone welcomed this strange, unsettling Jesus.
But some did. And to those who received Him β who opened their hands to what He was offering β He gave something that could not be earned: the right to be called children of God. Not visitors. Not admirers. Children. The legal standing of family, given as a free gift to anyone who would simply receive the One who came.
Your first step in faith is the oldest step β it is reception. Open your hands. He is already here.
"he gave the right to become children of God"
The Right You Were Given Β· exousia Β· G1849 Β· GREEK
Authority, right, or legal standing β a position granted by another's power and not one's own
The word translated "right" (exousia) is a legal term β it means standing, authorization, authority. John is saying that the moment you receive Christ, God gives you the legal and relational standing of a child. Not a child on probation. Not a child who needs to prove worthiness. A full, permanent, beloved child β because He said so, and His word is the highest authority in the universe. This is who you are now. Let that settle.
π Luke 15:11β24 Β· The Moment the Father Said "My Son"The younger son had rehearsed his speech on the long walk home. He would say: I am no more worthy to be called your son. Make me one of your hired servants. It was an honest assessment of his situation β he had taken his inheritance early, squandered it, and ended up feeding pigs in a foreign country, dreaming about their slop.
He never got to finish the speech. The father saw him from far off, ran, embraced him, and kissed him. Then, while the son was still reciting his prepared words, the father interrupted and called for a robe, a ring, sandals, and a fatted calf. Not the uniform of a servant β the marks of a son restored to full standing in the household.
Exousia β the right, the standing β was given back before the son had demonstrated any reform. The father's declaration made it real: "This my son was dead, and is alive again." Not "this my servant who is on a trial period." My son.
"not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God"
Born From Above Β· gennaΕ Β· G1080 Β· GREEK
To be born, begotten, or brought into being; used in John's Gospel specifically for the spiritual birth that only God can produce
John is emphatic: this new birth is not produced by family lineage (blood), personal willpower (the will of the flesh), or any other human effort (the will of man). It comes from God alone. Your new life in Christ is not a project you completed β it is a gift God began in you, and the life He started in you He will carry to completion. You did not talk yourself into this. He called you.
π John 3:1β8 Β· Wind You Cannot Control, Life You Did Not MakeNicodemus was confused. How can a grown man be born again? Jesus didn't soften the mystery: "The wind blows where it wishes, and you hear its sound, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone who is born of the Spirit."
The new birth is like wind β you cannot manufacture it, control it, or schedule it. You cannot earn it or bring it about by force of will. But you can feel it. You can open your sails to it. You can notice that something is happening in you that you did not put there yourself.
If you are exploring faith for the first time and something in you keeps drawing you back β a longing, a curiosity that won't go away, a feeling that there must be something more β that is not random. That is the wind of the Spirit moving in you, the first breath of a life that God is bringing to birth.

Prayer
Father, I am new at this, and I bring all my questions with me. Thank You that You don't require me to have everything figured out. I receive You today as best I know how β and I trust that You receive me. Teach me how to follow You, one step at a time. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Think about it
What first drew you toward faith β and what question are you still holding that you want to bring honestly to God?
I will take the next step in faith, trusting that the God who called me will guide me.
