"Heal me, O LORD, and I shall be healed"
The One Who Mends Β· rΔphΔ' Β· H7495 Β· HEBREW
To heal, to repair, to restore to health β the word used for God's direct intervention in the restoration of a broken body or broken condition
Jeremiah prayed this from a place of exhaustion and pain β he had been mocked, threatened, and persecuted for years of faithful ministry. When he cried for healing, he was not only asking for his body; he was asking for the healing of a life that had been battered. What makes this prayer so powerful is its confidence: if you heal me, I will be healed. If you save me, I will be saved. He is not appealing to medicine or politics or other helpers. He is placing the whole weight of his hope on God alone β and that is not desperation. That is clarity.
π 2 Kings 20:1β7 Β· The King Who Wept and Was HeardHezekiah was sick unto death. The prophet Isaiah came to him with the kind of news no patient wants to hear: set your house in order, for you shall die β you shall not recover from this illness.
Isaiah left. And Hezekiah turned his face to the wall and prayed. He reminded God of how he had walked before him faithfully and wholeheartedly. He wept bitterly.
Isaiah was still in the middle court when God stopped him and sent him back. Tell Hezekiah: I have heard your prayer, I have seen your tears. Behold, I will heal you. On the third day you shall go up to the house of the LORD, and I will add fifteen years to your life.
The terminal diagnosis became a testimony. The prayer that was prayed with no human hope of recovery was the prayer God heard and answered. And the healing came not from medicine alone but from the word of the God who makes the dead cells live again.
"save me, and I shall be saved"
Rescue and Restoration Β· yΔsha' Β· H3467 Β· HEBREW
To save, to deliver from danger or distress β used for physical rescue, national deliverance, and the deepest salvation of the person
Jeremiah uses two words in parallel β heal me and save me β and this pairing is not accidental. In Hebrew thinking, healing and salvation are not separate categories. The body and the soul are not enemies. A health crisis is a whole-person crisis, and God's response to it is whole-person care. When we face sickness, we are not just fighting a physical battle β we are navigating fear, identity, hope, and dependence. God meets all of it with one word: yasha. Saved.
π Numbers 21:4β9 Β· The Bronze Serpent and the Upward LookIsrael was complaining again in the wilderness β against God and against Moses. The food was miserable. Why had they been brought out of Egypt to die in this desert? And then the venomous snakes came. People were bitten. People were dying.
They came to Moses: We have sinned. Pray for us. Moses prayed. And God said: Make a bronze serpent and put it on a pole. Anyone who has been bitten β if they look at it, they will live.
It was a strange instruction. But Moses made the serpent and put it on the pole. And everyone who was bitten and looked at the bronze serpent lived.
The healing came through an act of trust that looked absurd. The bitten person could not fix themselves. They could not remove the venom. All they could do was look up. And looking up was enough. Jesus himself would use this story: Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up, that everyone who believes may have eternal life.
"you are my praise"
Praise Before the Answer Β· tehillΔh Β· H8416 Β· HEBREW
Praise, a song of adoration β offered not as a result of answered prayer but as the declaration of who God is regardless of circumstances
The most striking word in Jeremiah's prayer is the last one. He cries for healing and salvation β and then, before either has arrived, he says: you are my praise. Not "you will be my praise when you heal me." Not "I will praise you after the diagnosis clears." Praise before the answer is the most honest and most costly kind of worship, because it is offered with nothing to show for it yet. Jeremiah is declaring God's worthiness in the middle of the crisis β not at the other side of it.
π Acts 16:22β26 Β· Singing at Midnight in the Inner CellPaul and Silas had been stripped, beaten with rods, and thrown into the innermost cell of the prison in Philippi β their feet fastened in stocks. They had not been healed of their wounds. They had not been released. Nothing about their situation had improved.
At midnight, they were praying and singing hymns to God. The other prisoners were listening.
Then the earthquake came. The foundations shook. Every door opened. Every chain came loose. The jailer woke up, saw the open doors, and assumed the prisoners had fled β he drew his sword to kill himself. Paul called out from the dark: do not harm yourself, we are all here.
What had begun as praise before any sign of rescue became the prelude to deliverance for an entire household. The praise in the darkest moment was not wasted. It was the worship that echoed into a prison break and a salvation.
Declarations
- β¦ I cry to God for healing, trusting that he is Yahweh Rapha β the LORD who heals. (Exodus 15:26)
- β¦ My healing and my salvation belong to the same God who holds all things in his hands. (Jeremiah 17:14)
- β¦ I offer God praise before the answer comes β because he is worthy in the middle of this, not only after it. (Habakkuk 3:18)
- β¦ Present suffering does not have the final word β glory that is coming is weightier than what I am carrying. (2 Corinthians 4:17)
Prayer
Father, I bring this body before you β whatever it is carrying right now. I cry with Jeremiah: heal me, and I shall be healed. Save me, and I shall be saved. I do not want to pretend there is no fear; there is. I do not want to pretend the diagnosis does not matter; it does. But I say to you in the middle of all of it: you are my praise. You are worthy before the answer comes. Heal me according to your perfect knowledge of what I need, and sustain me with your presence until you do. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Think about it
What does "you are my praise" look like for you today β in the middle of the health situation you are navigating β before the outcome is clear?
I choose today to rest in the character of the God who heals β praising him before the answer comes and trusting his wisdom in how and when it arrives.
