"they who wait for the LORD"
The Cord That Holds Β· qavah Β· H6960 Β· HEBREW
To wait with expectant tension, like a rope twisted tightly β not passive resignation but directed hope
Waiting on God is not the same as waiting for a bus. The Hebrew word qavah carries the image of a cord wound tight β there is tension in it, purpose in it, direction in it. You are not killing time; you are being formed by it. The person who waits on God is actively trusting, actively looking, actively holding to what they cannot yet see. That kind of waiting is itself an act of profound faith.
π Genesis 8:1β12 Β· Noah Waited β Day After DayAfter the flood, the ark rested on the mountains of Ararat. But the waters didn't recede overnight. Noah waited and waited β sending out a raven, then a dove, and waiting again. Forty days passed. Then another seven. Then seven more.
The waiting wasn't failure. Every day of waiting was a day the earth was being renewed beneath the surface. Noah could not see what God was doing β he could only trust the covenant God had made, and keep waiting.
When the dove finally brought back an olive branch, it wasn't just news about the earth β it was proof that waiting on God always yields something. Even if the something is a leaf, a sign, a whisper that says: hold on, it's coming.
"renew their strength"
The Exchanged Life Β· chalaph Β· H2498 Β· HEBREW
To pass through and change β a divine exchange where what is worn-out is replaced with something fresh and new
The word for "renew" in Isaiah 40 is not about refueling the same old tank β it is about exchange. What is worn-out and depleted passes through God and what comes back is something new. God does not just top you off; He replaces what was exhausted with His own strength. The waiting itself is the mechanism of this exchange β as you exhaust your own resources, He steps in with His.
π 1 Kings 19:1β8 Β· Bread for the Journey AheadElijah had just called fire from heaven β and then ran for his life. He collapsed under a juniper tree and begged God to let him die. He was exhausted to his bones, the kind of tired that sleep alone cannot fix.
God didn't preach a sermon. God didn't correct his theology. An angel touched him and said simply: "Arise and eat." There was fresh bread and a jar of water, warm and waiting before Elijah had even asked.
The angel came a second time. The word was: "The journey is too great for you." Not too great for God β too great for you in your current state. The food that angel brought was enough to carry Elijah forty days to the mountain of God.
"mount up with wings like eagles"
The Rising High Β· alah Β· H5927 Β· HEBREW
To ascend, to go up, to rise above β a movement from the earthly to the elevated, from the cramped to the open sky
Eagles do not flap their wings frantically to soar β they spread them and ride the invisible thermal currents rising from the earth. The image Isaiah gives is not of frantic effort but of effortless elevation. Patient trust does not make you passive β it makes you aerodynamic. You let the Spirit lift you to a vantage point that anxious striving can never reach.
π Exodus 19:3β4 Β· God's Eagle Wings Over IsraelBefore God gave Israel the Law at Sinai, He said something intimate and vivid: "I bore you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself." God described the entire Exodus β plagues, the parted sea, the pillar of fire β not as a military campaign but as an eagle carrying its young.
An eagle does not let its young fall. When the eaglet stumbles, the parent dives beneath it and catches it on its own broad wings, then carries it back up. Israel had not earned their deliverance. They had not had sufficient faith or courage. God simply decided to carry them.
The same image appears centuries later in Isaiah 40 β not as a memory, but as a promise still standing. The same wings are still spread. The same God is still carrying His own.

Prayer
Father, I confess that waiting is hard for me. I want answers, I want movement, I want to see what You are doing. But today I choose to trust that You are active even when I cannot feel it. Renew my strength as I wait. Give me eagle-eyes to see beyond my present circumstances to Your larger purposes. Teach me that waiting on You is never wasted. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Think about it
What have you been waiting for, and what has that waiting revealed about where you are placing your trust?
I will wait on the LORD with open hands and a trusting heart, knowing He is working even when I cannot see it.
