"Be strong and courageous"
The Strengthened Grip Β· chazaq Β· H2388 Β· HEBREW
To be firm, strong, resolute β to take hold with a grip that does not let go when the pressure comes
God told Joshua to be strong and courageous four times in the first chapter of his book. This is not motivational repetition β it is the recognition that courage is hard enough to maintain that we need the command rehearsed over and over before the battle arrives. Courage is not the absence of fear; it is the decision to move toward the right thing in spite of fear. God does not say "feel brave." He says "be strong" β which implies that strength is a posture you can choose before your feelings confirm it.
π Jeremiah 1:6β10 Β· Before You Were Born, I Knew YouJeremiah's response to his calling was instant and honest: "Ah, Lord GOD! Behold, I do not know how to speak, for I am only a youth." He was not pretending to be humble β he was terrified. The assignment was enormous. He would spend his life delivering unwelcome words to people who would resist, reject, and threaten him.
God's response was direct. He did not argue with Jeremiah's assessment of himself. He simply redirected: "Do not say, 'I am only a youth'; for to all to whom I send you, you shall go, and whatever I command you, you shall speak." The command to be courageous was not rooted in Jeremiah's qualifications. It was rooted in God's commission.
Then God reached out His hand and touched Jeremiah's mouth and said: "I have put my words in your mouth." The strength required for the task was not something Jeremiah would have to generate. It was something God would place in him. He just had to go.
"Do not be frightened, and do not be dismayed"
The Shattered Spirit Β· chathath Β· H2865 Β· HEBREW
To be dismayed, terrified, shattered β the collapse of resolve that happens when pressure overwhelms the soul's confidence in God
The word chathath describes the experience of being so overwhelmed by circumstances that your inner resolve fractures. It is the difference between healthy fear that sharpens attention and paralyzing fear that shatters confidence. God commands against both frightened and dismayed β two different faces of the same pressure. Fear freezes; dismay scatters. God's antidote to both is not a better strategy but a reoriented gaze β looking at who is with you rather than what is against you.
π Acts 18:9β11 Β· Do Not Be Afraid β I Have Many People in This CityPaul arrived in Corinth after a difficult stretch β beaten in Philippi, rejected in Thessalonica, nearly abandoned in Berea, and met with skepticism in Athens. He was alone, and by his own admission, he came to Corinth "in weakness and in fear and much trembling."
One night God spoke to him in a vision: "Do not be afraid, but go on speaking and do not be silent, for I am with you, and no one will attack you to harm you, for I have many in this city who are my people." God saw the fear. God spoke directly into it.
Paul stayed in Corinth for a year and a half. The vision did not eliminate the opposition β there were still legal threats, false accusations, and public attack. But the word had been spoken, and the dismayed man became the man who stayed and built one of the most important churches in the ancient world.
"the LORD your God is with you wherever you go"
The God Who Goes Β· halak Β· H1980 Β· HEBREW
To walk, to go, to move β God does not wait at the destination; He walks with you into the unknown places
The most powerful phrase in Joshua 1:9 is not the command β it is the ground beneath the command. Wherever you go, the LORD your God is with you. Not wherever you succeed. Not wherever you feel His presence. Wherever you go. The alien territory, the intimidating meeting, the grieving room, the hospital corridor, the difficult conversation β all of it is territory where God has already promised His presence. Courage is not generated by knowing the outcome; it is sustained by knowing who walks alongside you into the unknown.
π Genesis 28:10β16 Β· God's Presence at the Edge of the WorldJacob fled his home with nothing β he had deceived his father, stolen his brother's blessing, and his life was under threat. He was alone, on the run, sleeping with a rock for a pillow on the edge of a wilderness.
God came to him there. Not when Jacob was at his best. Not when he had figured things out. God showed up at the worst, most alone moment of Jacob's life and said: "Behold, I am with you and will keep you wherever you go and will bring you back to this land."
Jacob woke and said: "Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not know it." He had not felt the presence. He had been running, afraid, alone. God was there anyway. The courage Jacob needed for the long road ahead was not manufactured β it was received from the God who shows up in wilderness moments.

Prayer
Father, I admit that I am afraid. The thing in front of me feels too big, and I do not feel strong enough or brave enough for it. But I come to You not with my courage β I come with Your promise. You said You will be with me wherever I go. So I go, not trusting in myself, but trusting in You who goes with me. Fill me with Your strength for today. Let me be brave because You are near. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Think about it
What specific thing are you being called to do that requires courage β and what does fear tell you about what you are trusting more than God in that situation?
I will be strong and courageous β not because I feel ready, but because the LORD my God is with me wherever I go.
