"abide in my word"
The One Who Stays Β· menΕ Β· G3306 Β· GREEK
To remain, to dwell, to make one's home in β not a passing visit but a settled, permanent residence in what God has said
The Greek word meno means to make your home somewhere β not to visit, not to pass through, but to unpack and stay. Jesus did not say "if you read my word" or "if you understand my word" β He said abide. Obedience begins with the decision to make what God says the place you live from, not just a resource you consult. The disciple who abides in Jesus's word is not someone with more discipline β it is someone who has decided that this is home.
π Luke 10:38β42 Β· Mary Chose the One ThingMartha welcomed Jesus into her home and threw herself into preparation β the work of hospitality, the labor of love, the business of being a good host. Mary sat at Jesus's feet and listened to His teaching. Both sisters loved Jesus. Only one was doing what Jesus called "the good portion."
Martha came to Jesus frustrated and asked Him to tell Mary to help. Jesus's answer was gentle but clear: "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her."
The good portion was presence. Attention. Abiding at the feet of Jesus while He spoke. Martha's work was not wrong β it was simply not first. The person who abides in His word first does everything else from a different center, with a different orientation. Mary was not avoiding obedience β she was practicing its deepest form.
"you will know the truth"
The Knowing That Changes You Β· ginΕskΕ Β· G1097 Β· GREEK
To know through experience and relationship, not merely through information β the knowing that has you in it, not just the facts
The Greek ginΕskΕ is not the knowing of a textbook β it is the knowing of a conversation, a relationship, an encounter. It is the word used for the knowledge a husband and wife share. Jesus promises that abiding in His word leads to this kind of knowing of truth β not just knowing facts about God, but a knowing that alters you from the inside. Truth that you know in the ginΕskΕ sense is truth that has walked into your life and rearranged the furniture. It is not neutral information; it is transforming encounter.
π John 4:7β29 Β· He Told Me Everything I Ever DidThe woman at the well was guarded. Five marriages, a current partner, the shame of being at the well alone at noon when the other women came in the morning. She knew how to deflect β she tried theology, geography, religion, anything to avoid the conversation going where it was going.
But Jesus stayed on the real thing. He told her what no stranger should have known about her life. And instead of feeling exposed and condemned, she ran to her village and said: "Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?" The truth that knew her did not destroy her β it freed her.
This is what it means to know the truth in the way Jesus describes. Not information about God at a safe distance, but a truth that sees all the way through you and loves what it sees β and in loving it, begins to change it.
"set you free"
The Life Unchained Β· eleutherΕo Β· G1659 Β· GREEK
To liberate, to release from bondage β freedom that works from the inside out, not dependent on external circumstances
The freedom Jesus describes is not a change of address β it is a change of nature. The person set free by truth is not someone who found a better situation; they are someone whose inner life has been liberated from what was holding them captive. The paradox of obedience is that submission to God's truth is not imprisonment β it is the very mechanism of release from every other bondage. The person who abides in God's word and comes to know the truth is the freest person in any room, regardless of their circumstances.
π John 9:13β34 Β· He Would Not Give Up What He KnewAfter Jesus healed a man born blind, the religious leaders interrogated him. They wanted him to say Jesus was a sinner. They called Jesus a sinner. They questioned the man's parents. They questioned the man again. The pressure was enormous β this was an organized religious establishment demanding he deny what he knew to be true.
His answer became more confident with each round of interrogation. By the end, he was almost defiant: "Whether he is a sinner I do not know. One thing I do know: I was blind, and now I see." He held the truth he had experienced like a man holding the only solid thing in a room full of shifting ground.
They threw him out. Jesus then found him and revealed Himself to him. The man who had been born blind and then thrown out by the establishment ended up in the presence of the Son of God β because he would not let go of the truth that had set him free.

Prayer
Father, I want to be truly free β not just in theory, but in the way I live and think and respond. Show me where I have been living as though still in chains when You have already purchased my freedom. Help me to abide in Your word β not as a discipline to perform but as a home to live from. Let Your truth do its deep work in me. Bring me into the wide open space of obedience. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Think about it
What does "abiding in God's word" look like practically in your actual life β and where is the gap between where you are and where you want to be?
I will abide in God's word, making it the place I live from rather than merely consult β and I will trust that the truth I find there is setting me free.
