"seek first the kingdom of God"
The Primary Pursuit Β· zΔteΕ Β· G2212 Β· GREEK
To seek, to look for, to strive after with diligence β the deliberate, active orientation of life's primary energy toward a single aim
The word Jesus uses for "seek" is an active, effortful word β it describes the pursuit of someone who is genuinely looking, not passively hoping something will appear. The phrase "seek first" contains a priority claim: first means before everything else, not instead of everything else. Simplicity is not the removal of all the other things you have to do β it is the decision about which thing comes before all others, and letting that decision organize the rest. The life simplified around the kingdom is not an empty life; it is a rightly ordered one.
π Matthew 13:45β46 Β· He Sold Everything for the One ThingJesus told a parable of a merchant in search of fine pearls. This was a man whose whole professional life was built around pearls β he knew their value, he knew the difference between mediocre and magnificent, and he knew that the search was worth sustaining.
Then he found one. One pearl. And the text says simply: "On finding it, he went and sold all that he had and bought it." No deliberation recorded, no list of pros and cons, no consultation with advisors. He sold everything. The simplicity of the decision was made possible by the clarity of the value.
Jesus says: the kingdom of God is that pearl. Not one of many fine pearls β the one that reorders everything around it. The person who has found the kingdom has found the thing that makes the selling-of-everything simple rather than tragic. It is not what you give up; it is what you gain.
"his righteousness"
The Right Way of Being Β· dikaiosynΔ Β· G1343 Β· GREEK
Righteousness, rightness, justice β the quality of life lived in alignment with God's character; not just moral correctness but relational wholeness with God
Seeking God's righteousness means more than following rules β it means pursuing the quality of life that reflects God's own character, where you love what He loves, hate what He hates, and live in right relationship with Him and with others. The focused life seeks not just a clean moral record but an alignment of the heart. Righteousness sought alongside the kingdom is not the addition of a religious obligation β it is the description of what a life genuinely organized around God actually looks like.
π Micah 6:6β8 Β· What the LORD Actually RequiresThe people of Israel came with elaborate religious questions: Should we bring burnt offerings? Thousands of rams? Rivers of oil? Should we give our firstborn? They were ready to perform β to make their religion complex and costly if that is what it took.
Micah's answer on behalf of God cuts straight through all of it: "He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the LORD require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?"
Three things. Not three hundred. Three β and they are all about the quality of relationship rather than the quantity of performance. Justice toward others, kindness as a sustained posture, and humility before God. This is the righteousness Jesus describes β not religious busyness, but a way of being that is simple, deep, and total.
"all these things will be added to you"
The Gift of More Β· prostithΔmi Β· G4369 Β· GREEK
To add, to give in addition, to place alongside β what God brings to your life as a gift when the first thing is first
The promise of Matthew 6:33 is not that you will never have needs β it is that the God who knows what you need (Jesus said this in the same passage) will ensure that what you need comes. "Added" is the language of overflow, of God supplementing the life of the kingdom-seeker with the practical provisions that would otherwise dominate the whole agenda. The focused life does not go without; it receives its needs from a different direction β not from anxious pursuit of the things themselves, but from the hand of the God who owns them all.
π 1 Kings 3:5β14 Β· Solomon Asked for One Thing β God Added Everything ElseGod appeared to Solomon in a dream and made an extraordinary offer: "Ask what I shall give you." Solomon could have asked for anything β long life, wealth, the death of his enemies. Instead, he asked for wisdom. An understanding heart. The ability to discern between good and evil to govern his people well.
God was pleased. Deeply pleased. And He said: because you have asked for this thing β and not for long life or riches or the death of your enemies β I will give you what you asked for. And then God added everything else: riches and honor beyond any king before or after him, and the promise of long life if he kept God's ways.
Solomon sought the kingdom first β wisdom for God's purposes, not his own benefit. And all the other things were added. Not because seeking wisdom is a prosperity formula, but because the God who is the source of all things is generous toward the one who seeks Him first.
Declarations
- β¦ I seek first the kingdom of God, and I trust Him to add what I need. (Matthew 6:33)
- β¦ I choose one thing β the presence and purposes of God β as the organizing center of my life. (Psalm 27:4)
- β¦ I will not be anxious about tomorrow; sufficient for today is its own call to faithfulness. (Matthew 6:34)
- β¦ God will not withhold any good thing from me as I walk with Him. (Psalm 84:11)
Prayer
Father, I confess that my life is often pulled in too many directions, organized around too many competing priorities, with Your kingdom somewhere on the list but not first on it. Simplify me. Help me find the one thing that reorders everything else. Give me the focus to seek Your kingdom and Your righteousness above all the many things that press for my attention. I trust You to add what I need. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Think about it
If you were to honestly map how you spend your time, attention, and energy in a week β what is first? And what would have to change for God's kingdom to take that place?
I will seek God's kingdom and righteousness first β letting that single priority simplify my choices, focus my attention, and trust my provision to the God who adds what I need.
