"We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we shall certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his."

"Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father"
The Glory That Raises Β· doxΔ Β· G1391 Β· GREEK
The radiant, weighty, manifest presence and power of God β the very nature of who He is, expressed in action
The resurrection was not a quiet miracle. Paul says it happened by the glory of the Father β the full, unleashed weight of who God is, turned toward His Son in the tomb. This is the same power Paul prays the Ephesians would know "toward us who believe." The glory that raised Jesus from the dead is the power that now works in you β not a polite spiritual influence but the force that overcame death itself. Baptism declares your participation in that power. You went under the water in union with a dead Christ β you came up in union with a risen one.
π John 20:1β18 Β· The Morning That Changed EverythingMary came to the tomb in the dark, before sunrise. She wasn't coming with hope β she was coming to grieve. When she found the stone moved, her first thought wasn't resurrection; it was theft. Someone had taken him.
Peter and John ran to see. John saw and believed, though he didn't fully understand yet what the scriptures had said. Then they went home β but Mary stayed. She stood outside the tomb weeping, and when she looked in, she saw two angels. And then she turned and saw a man she thought was the gardener.
He said one word: her name. "Mary." That was all it took. She knew. She turned and said, "Rabboni" β Teacher. The one she thought was gone was standing in front of her, alive, speaking her name.
This is the morning baptism points toward. Not a ritual cleansing but a participation in the event that split history. The empty tomb is why the water means what it means.
"walk in newness of life"
The Freshness of the New Β· kainotΔs Β· G2538 Β· GREEK
Newness in quality β not just different but of a different kind entirely; a freshness that has no precedent in what came before
The newness Paul describes is not a renewed version of the old life β it is a different kind of life altogether. KainotΔs carries the sense of a quality that didn't exist before, not merely an improvement. You did not get better when you came to Christ; you were made new. The call to walk in newness of life is the call to live from what you actually are, not from the habits and identity of the person who went under the water. Baptism is the declaration β the daily walk is the living-out of what was declared.
π Acts 8:26β40 Β· The Man Who Couldn't Wait to Get in the WaterPhilip was sent by an angel to a desert road β a strange instruction for a man who had been in the middle of a citywide revival. On that road, he found a high-ranking official from Ethiopia, riding in his chariot, reading Isaiah aloud and understanding none of it.
Philip ran alongside the chariot. "Do you understand what you are reading?" The official invited him up, and Philip began with that very passage β the suffering servant of Isaiah 53 β and told him about Jesus.
As they traveled, they came to some water. The official didn't hesitate: "Look, here is water. What prevents me from being baptized?" They stopped the chariot. Both of them went down into the water, and Philip baptized him.
When they came up out of the water, the Spirit of the Lord carried Philip away. The official never saw him again. But he went on his way rejoicing β because something had happened in that water that changed the direction his life was now walking.
"united with him in a death like his"
Grown Together With Β· symphytos Β· G4854 Β· GREEK
Conjoined by nature, grown together as a graft β not merely associated with but organically joined to, sharing the same life
The word Paul uses here is not a metaphor for closeness β it is a word for organic union, like a branch grafted into a vine. You were not just symbolically buried with Christ; you were joined to His death in a way that is as real as His death was real. What happened to Him happened to you β not in history, but in the reckoning of God who joined you to His Son. And just as His death was real, so is the resurrection on the other side. The death is what makes the new life possible. Something had to end for something to begin.
π Luke 23:26β46 Β· The Death That Made the Water Mean SomethingThe soldiers made Simon of Cyrene carry the cross. Jesus had already been beaten beyond strength; the weight was too much. They led Him to a place called The Skull, and there they crucified Him β along with two criminals, one on each side.
He was mocked while He hung there. The rulers sneered. The soldiers gambled for His clothing. One of the criminals hurled insults. But Jesus prayed for those crucifying Him: "Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do."
Darkness covered the land for three hours. And then, at the end, Jesus cried out in a loud voice: "Father, into your hands I commit my spirit." And He breathed His last.
This is the death baptism joins us to. Not a symbol. A real death β painful, public, complete. The union Paul describes in Romans 6 is union with this death. And if with this death, then with what followed: a resurrection that nothing in the world had the power to prevent.
Declarations
- β¦ I have been buried with Christ and raised with Him β death no longer has the final word over my life. (Romans 6:4)
- β¦ I am a new creation; the old has passed away and the new has truly come. (2 Corinthians 5:17)
- β¦ I am united with Christ in His resurrection, and the power that raised Him is now at work in me. (Ephesians 1:19-20)
- β¦ I walk in the direction baptism declared β away from the old and into the new life God gave me. (Romans 6:4)
Prayer
Father, thank you that baptism is not a ritual I performed but a reality you declared over me β that I am buried with Christ and raised with Him into a life that is genuinely new. Forgive me for the times I have lived as if the old self never died, as if the old life still defines me. Remind me today what the water said: I am united with your Son, and nothing can undo that. Help me to walk in what you have already made true. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Think about it
What does it mean for you, practically, to "walk in newness of life" β and what old patterns are you still walking in that the water declared finished?
I will walk today as someone who has already been raised β living from what Christ has made true rather than from what I used to be.
