"power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you"
The Power You Don't Generate Β· dynamis Β· G1411 Β· GREEK
Power, might, ability β the inherent capacity to produce an effect; in New Testament usage, specifically the supernatural enabling that comes from God rather than from human effort
Jesus does not tell the disciples to gather their courage and go tell people about Him. He tells them to wait β to wait for a power they cannot manufacture on their own. The word dynamis is the root of our word "dynamite": a force that comes from outside and produces effects far beyond what the carrier could accomplish alone. Witness is not a personality trait for the confident or a skill for the articulate β it is a supernatural enabling for anyone who has received the Spirit of God. The disciples were ordinary, often cowardly, frequently confused. What changed them was not a training program. It was Pentecost.
π Acts 2:1β21 Β· The Day the Witnesses Were MadeThey were all together in one place. Then, suddenly β a sound like a mighty rushing wind, filling the whole house. Tongues of fire resting on each of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other languages as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Devout Jews from every nation were in Jerusalem for the feast. When the sound came, a crowd gathered, bewildered, because each one heard them speaking in his own language. What does this mean? Some said they were drunk.
Peter stood up. This same Peter who had denied Jesus three times, who had hidden behind locked doors, who had fled the garden. He stood up and spoke, and what came out of him was not careful words that he had rehearsed. It was scripture. It was proclamation. It was witness.
Three thousand people believed that day. The witness that changed the world didn't begin with strategy. It began with power β and ordinary people who received it.
"you will be my witnesses"
The Living Testimony Β· martys Β· G3144 Β· GREEK
A witness β one who testifies to what they have personally seen, heard, and experienced; the root word from which we get "martyr," one whose witness cost everything
Jesus does not say you will do witnessing β He says you will be witnesses. The distinction is significant. A witness is not someone who performs a task; a witness is someone who testifies to what they have personally seen and experienced. You cannot be a witness about what you don't know firsthand. The most powerful form of evangelism is not a well-rehearsed presentation but a genuine account of who Jesus has been to you β your story, told honestly, to someone who needs to hear it. You were there when it happened to you. That makes you a witness.
π John 4:28β30, 39β42 Β· The Woman Who Left Her Water JarShe came to the well at noon β the hour when no one else would be there, when a woman with her history could draw water without the weight of other women's stares. Jesus asked her for water. By the time the conversation was over, He had told her everything she had ever done β and she had discovered that the one speaking to her was the Messiah.
She left her water jar. The thing she came for. And she went back into the town she had been avoiding. She said to the people there: "Come, see a man who told me all that I ever did. Can this be the Christ?"
Many Samaritans from that town believed in Him because of the woman's testimony. They came out to see for themselves β and when they heard Him directly, they said to her: "We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world."
Her witness was not polished. She was a woman with a complicated past, speaking to people who knew it. But she had seen something, and she could not stop talking about it. That was enough to bring a town to Jesus.
"to the end of the earth"
The Outermost Edge Β· eschatou Β· G2078 Β· GREEK
The last, the uttermost, the farthest β the edge of the known world; the boundary point that defines how far the commission extends
Jesus does not say witness is for the nearby and the comfortable. He maps it concentrically outward: Jerusalem (home), Judea (the familiar region), Samaria (the uncomfortable neighbors), and then β the end of the earth. Every circle is larger. Every circle involves more cost. The commission is designed to keep expanding, because the love of God does not stop at the borders of the community we have already reached. Faithful witness begins in Jerusalem β in your own home, workplace, neighborhood β but it never settles there. It keeps asking: who is at the outermost edge that hasn't heard yet?
π Acts 8:1β8 Β· The Persecution That Scattered Them β Into WitnessWhen Stephen was killed, a great persecution arose against the church in Jerusalem. Saul was ravaging the church, entering house after house, dragging men and women off to prison. The disciples scattered throughout the regions of Judea and Samaria.
And those who scattered went everywhere preaching the word. Philip went down to a city of Samaria β the region Jesus had specifically named β and proclaimed the Messiah. The crowds were attentive, hearing and seeing the miracles he performed. Unclean spirits came out of many. The paralyzed and lame were healed. And there was great joy in that city.
The persecution that was meant to silence the church accidentally fulfilled the commission. They had been slow to leave Jerusalem. God used the hardest possible circumstances to scatter them into exactly the territory Jesus had described: Judea, Samaria, and on toward the ends of the earth.
The witness didn't require perfect conditions. It required people who, even in the middle of crisis, couldn't stop talking about what they knew.
Declarations
- β¦ I am a witness β not because I am qualified, but because I have encountered Jesus and I carry the Spirit who empowers me to speak. (Acts 1:8)
- β¦ The Holy Spirit gives me the power I do not have in myself to speak of what Christ has done. (Acts 1:8)
- β¦ I live in such a way that my life makes people ask questions β and I am ready to answer with gentleness and respect. (1 Peter 3:15)
- β¦ I go in witness knowing that Christ is with me always β to the end of the age and to the end of the earth. (Matthew 28:20)
Prayer
Father, I confess that I have often let fear silence the story you gave me to tell. I have treated evangelism as someone else's gift rather than every believer's identity. Forgive me for the times I chose silence when witness was the more loving act. Fill me again with the Spirit who empowers my words to reach beyond what I could accomplish alone. Help me to live a life that makes people curious, and to have the courage to tell them where the hope comes from. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Think about it
Who in your Jerusalem β your immediate life β has God placed in your path who needs to hear what you have personally experienced of Jesus?
I will not let fear choose silence for me β I will trust the Spirit to give me the words and the courage to be the witness Jesus named me.
