The Greek word eikon (Ξ΅αΌ°ΞΊΟΞ½) β used in the New Testament to describe both who Christ is and who we are becoming β holds three transforming truths: we are made in the image of God, we are being renewed into that image, and we are destined to bear the likeness of Christ. Identity in Scripture is not discovered β it is received.

"So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them." (Genesis 1:27)
The Original Stamp Β· eikon Β· G1504 Β· GREEK
The divine image pressed into every human being at creation β not earned, not achieved, not dependent on performance or approval.
Before you did anything, you were something: the image of God. Every human being arrives in the world carrying the original stamp of the divine β this is the deepest fact about your identity. The Hebrew word tselem (echoed by eikon in the Greek Old Testament) was used for royal statues placed throughout a kingdom to represent the king's authority and presence. To be made in God's image is to be placed in creation as God's representative, his living ambassador. Nothing you have done or failed to do can erase that stamp.
π Genesis 1:1β31 Β· The Day Humanity Was CrownedOn the sixth day of creation, God had already filled the world with light, sky, sea, land, and creatures. Then he paused. Something different was about to happen.
"Let us make man in our image, after our likeness." These words set the creation of humanity apart from everything else. Animals were created "according to their kinds." Humanity was created according to the kind of God himself.
God breathed into Adam. Woman was drawn from his side. Together they stood in the garden β not as products of nature alone, but as living icons of the Creator, image-bearers set to tend, name, and steward a world made for relationship with God.
That is still what you are. Before a career defines you, before failure or success attaches to your name, before anyone else tells you who you are β you are this: the image of God.
"We all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another." (2 Corinthians 3:18)
The Slow Becoming Β· eikon Β· G1504 Β· GREEK
The ongoing transformation of a believer's inner life into the image of Christ β a continuous divine work, not a one-time event.
Paul uses the present passive participle: we are being transformed. Not "were" β not past tense, a moment behind you. Not "will be" β not future tense, always ahead. Right now, in this season, you are in the process of becoming more like Christ. Identity in Christ is not only what you are; it is what you are becoming β and God himself is doing the becoming in you. The unveiled face is key: you can't be transformed by what you're not looking at.
π Exodus 34:29β35 Β· The Face That Couldn't Stop ShiningMoses had spent forty days on the mountain in the presence of God. He came down holding the tablets of the law, unaware that his face was shining β glowing with reflected divine glory.
The Israelites were afraid to come near him. Moses had to put a veil over his face simply so people could look at him without terror.
Paul uses this story to make a striking contrast. Under the old covenant, Moses veiled the glory because it was fading. Under the new covenant, we behold God with unveiled faces β and instead of the glory fading, it grows. We are being transformed from glory into glory.
What you look at changes you. The longer you behold the Lord, the more his image is pressed into yours. This is the work of the Spirit β not effort, not striving, but beholding.
"Have put on the new self, which is being renewed in knowledge after the image of its creator." (Colossians 3:10)
The New Self Β· eikon Β· G1504 Β· GREEK
The renewed identity of the believer in Christ β not a repaired version of the old self, but a genuinely new creation being brought into alignment with the image of God.
Paul's language is both completed action and ongoing process: you have put on the new self β decision made, identity claimed β and that new self is being renewed. In Christ, you are not a work-in-progress hoping to become something; you are already a new creation that is growing into what you already are. The new self is not a mask over the old β it is a genuine transformation of who you actually are, from the inside out.
π Luke 15:11β24 Β· The Son Who Forgot His NameThe younger son left home with an inheritance and came back with nothing β worse than nothing. He had wasted what he was given, lost what he had, and ended up feeding pigs in a foreign country. He rehearsed a speech: "Make me one of your hired servants. I am no longer worthy to be called your son."
But his father saw him from a distance. He ran. Before the son could finish his speech, the robe was on his shoulders, the ring was on his finger, the sandals were on his feet.
The father interrupted his identity crisis with a declaration: "This is my son." Not "was." Not "used to be." Is.
The son had tried to trade his identity for a position. The father refused the trade. Identity in God's household is not earned β it is given, and it holds even when you forget it.
Declarations
- β¦ I am made in the image of God β this is the deepest truth about who I am. (Genesis 1:27)
- β¦ I am a new creation in Christ; my old identity has passed away and the new has come. (2 Corinthians 5:17)
- β¦ I am being transformed into the image of Christ from glory to glory by the Spirit of God. (2 Corinthians 3:18)
- β¦ My life is hidden with Christ in God β no one can take from me what is secured there. (Colossians 3:3)
Prayer
Father, I confess how often I look to people, performance, and approval to tell me who I am. Today I receive what you have already declared: I am made in your image, I am your child, I am a new creation in Christ. Renew my mind where old identities still speak louder than yours. Let me live from who you say I am. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Think about it
What voices or experiences have most shaped how you see yourself? How does God's declaration β that you are his image, his child, his new creation β challenge or heal those messages?
I will build my life on who God says I am, not on what the world reflects back to me.
