The Greek word dynamis (Ξ΄ΟΞ½Ξ±ΞΌΞΉΟ) means the inherent, miraculous power of God β given to believers as the very force that fuels their witness and calling, and experienced most fully when human strength has run out. It is the root of our word "dynamite."

"But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit has come upon you, and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the end of the earth." (Acts 1:8)
The Witness Fuel Β· dynamis Β· G1411 Β· GREEK
Divine dynamis given through the Spirit specifically to empower witness β the ability to speak, act, and live for God in ways that exceed natural capacity
Jesus didn't say "go and be my witnesses in your own strength." He said wait for the dynamis first β and then go. The power precedes the mission; the mission is impossible without it. The disciples who hid behind locked doors after the crucifixion became the people who turned the Roman Empire upside down. The only thing that changed was Pentecost.
π Acts 4:1β13 Β· The Men They Could Not ExplainAfter healing a lame man at the temple gate, Peter and John were arrested and brought before the Sanhedrin β the same council that had condemned Jesus. They were asked by what power they had done this thing.
Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, began to preach. He named Jesus. He named the resurrection. He named the stone the builders rejected that became the cornerstone. He did not stammer or apologize.
The council was astonished. And what they noticed was not theological brilliance or rhetorical training. What they noticed was that these were "uneducated, common men." They had no credentials for what they were doing. The only explanation was that they had been with Jesus.
That is the dynamis. Not the power of preparation or position or natural gifting β but the unmistakable mark of the presence of God on ordinary people who have received the Spirit's power.
"For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek." (Romans 1:16)
The Saving Power Β· dynamis Β· G1411 Β· GREEK
The dynamis of God expressed in the gospel β an explosive force that overcomes sin, death, and separation, delivering all who believe into salvation
Paul calls the gospel "the dynamis of God for salvation." Not a helpful guide. Not a moral framework. Not good advice. An explosive force that, when received by faith, accomplishes something that nothing else in the universe can accomplish: salvation. The cross looked like weakness. What looked like weakness was actually the most powerful event in history.
π Acts 9:1β19 Β· The Most Unlikely Convert in HistorySaul of Tarsus had papers in his hand authorizing him to arrest followers of Jesus in Damascus. He was breathing threats and murder against the church. He was the last person anyone would have expected to meet Jesus.
On the road, a light from heaven knocked him to the ground. "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?" The voice named itself: Jesus. The same Jesus Saul had been hunting through his proxies in chains.
Three days later, Saul was blind and fasting in Damascus when a frightened believer named Ananias came and laid his hands on him. "Brother Saul, the Lord Jesus who appeared to you on the road has sent me so that you may regain your sight and be filled with the Holy Spirit."
The man who was executing the church became its greatest apostle. That is the dynamis of the gospel. It does not ask if you deserve it. It does not wait for you to be ready. It arrives with the force of light and changes everything in an instant.
"For the word of the cross is folly to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God." (1 Corinthians 1:18)
The Foolish Kind of Power Β· dynamis Β· G1411 Β· GREEK
Dynamis hidden inside apparent weakness and foolishness β the divine power at work in the cross that confounds human logic and overturns every human evaluation of strength
The cross looked like the least powerful event in the history of the world: God dying in public, abandoned and mocked. Paul says this is where the dynamis of God is most concentrated. The place where God appeared weakest was the place where He was actually strongest. Dynamis in the kingdom of God is consistently found inside things that look like failure by every human measure.
π 1 Corinthians 1:26β31 Β· God's Strange Recruiting StrategyPaul reminded the Corinthians what their congregation looked like when God called them: not many wise, not many powerful, not many of noble birth. God had chosen what the world considers foolish to shame the wise. He chose what is weak to shame the strong. He chose what is low and despised to bring to nothing what is called great.
This was not an accident or a limitation in God's recruiting ability. It was a strategy. If the wise and powerful and noble were the ones God used, everyone would credit the wise and powerful and noble. By using the unexpected, the overlooked, the underqualified, God ensures that the dynamis is unmistakably His.
The cross is the master example of this principle. The most powerful event in history looked like the most powerless. The foolish thing of God shamed the wisdom of the world. The weak thing of God shamed the strength of the world.
The dynamis works best in the container nobody expected.
Declarations
- β¦ I have received the dynamis of the Holy Spirit and I am equipped for everything God has called me to. (Acts 1:8)
- β¦ God gave me a spirit of power, not of fear β I walk in what He gave me. (2 Timothy 1:7)
- β¦ The gospel I carry is the dynamis of God for salvation β it is not a weak word but an explosive one. (Romans 1:16)
- β¦ God is able to do far more abundantly than I ask or think by the dynamis at work within me. (Ephesians 3:20)
Prayer
Father, I confess that I have often tried to do Your work with my own strength β and wondered why I was so tired. Today I ask for the dynamis that You promised: not my might or my power, but Your Spirit. Let the power that raised Jesus from the dead, that turned Saul into Paul, that filled a room and changed the world β let that same dynamis work in me and through me. I am available. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Think about it
Where in your life are you relying primarily on your own strength rather than the dynamis of God? What would it look like to shift that?
I will stop waiting until I feel powerful enough and start moving in the dynamis that God has already placed within me.
