"And they inquired of the LORD, 'Is there a man still to come?' And the LORD said, 'Behold, he has hidden himself among the baggage.' And they ran and brought him from there. And when he stood among the people, he was taller than any of the people from his shoulders upward."

"He has hidden himself among the baggage"
The Hiding Place Β· chaba Β· H2244 Β· HEBREW
To withdraw and conceal oneself, often out of fear or a sense of unworthiness; to be present but deliberately out of sight
The irony is almost unbearable: the tallest man in Israel, the anointed king, was hiding in the luggage. Fear does not care how gifted you are β it will make you small if you let it. Saul had already received the Spirit of God, already prophesied with the prophets, already been told by Samuel that he was the Lord's anointed. He knew. And he hid anyway. If you have ever received a clear word from God and then found yourself disappearing into the background when it was time to step forward β you understand this moment exactly.
π 1 Samuel 9:1β10:24 Β· The Search for a King Who Didn't Want to Be FoundIt started with lost donkeys. Saul's father sent him to find them, and when they could not be found, a servant suggested they visit the man of God in the nearby city. Saul hesitated even at this: "But look, if we go, what can we bring the man? For the bread in our sacks is gone, and there is no present to bring to the man of God." He was already negotiating reasons why he should not show up.
Samuel had been told by God the day before that the man he was looking for would arrive. When Saul came up the road, God told Samuel: "Here is the man of whom I told you! He it is who shall restrain my people." Samuel pulled Saul aside, gave him the best seat at the feast, kept back a portion of meat that had been reserved specifically for this moment, and anointed him the next morning with oil and a kiss. He told Saul exactly what signs to expect β and they happened exactly as Samuel described. Even the prophesying. Saul came home a different man.
Then came the day of the public presentation. Samuel gathered all Israel. The lots were cast β tribe by tribe, then family by family β and they kept landing on Saul. And at the moment when his name was on every tongue and a nation was waiting to meet its king, they could not find him. They asked God, and God said: he's in the luggage.
They pulled him out. He stood head and shoulders above everyone. And the people shouted: "Long live the king!"
"He stood among the people"
The Standing Β· amad Β· H5975 Β· HEBREW
To take one's place and remain upright; to present oneself before others or before God with all that you carry
He did not walk out voluntarily. He did not raise his hand. He was brought. And yet β he stood. Sometimes the act of simply allowing yourself to be placed where God has called you is the whole of the obedience required in that moment. Saul could have refused. He could have kept hiding. He stood. That standing was the beginning of everything β the anointing, the kingdom, the years ahead. The moment you stop fighting where God has placed you and simply stand there β that is when history begins.
π 1 Samuel 10:21β24 Β· Brought Out and Set Before EveryoneThe lot fell on the tribe of Benjamin. Then the clan of Matri. Then the family of Kish. Then the name: Saul. All Israel turned to see the man God had chosen β and the man was not there. The question rose through the crowd: where is he? They asked God, and the answer came back: he has hidden himself among the baggage.
Men ran. They found him tucked among the packs and supplies, the tallest man in Israel folded into the one place where no one was supposed to look for a king. They pulled him out and brought him to Samuel. Whatever Saul was feeling in those steps β the heat of a thousand watching eyes, the weight of what could no longer be escaped β he did not run again. He came and he stood.
Samuel turned to the crowd and said: "Do you see him whom the LORD has chosen? There is none like him among all the people." And the people erupted β "Long live the king!" β and just like that, a man who had been hiding in the luggage moments before was standing in the center of a nation, acclaimed by every voice in the assembly.
He had not found the courage to step forward. The courage had come from being brought. But he had allowed himself to be brought, and in that allowance, everything changed. The hiding was over. The standing had begun.
"Taller than any of the people from his shoulders upward"
Hidden Stature Β· gaboah Β· H1364 Β· HEBREW
To be high, elevated, or exalted; a height that is already present, even when the one who carries it is out of sight
He was already the tallest man in Israel before anyone knew his name. The gifts were not bestowed at the moment of presentation β they were there in the baggage, hidden alongside him. What God has placed in you does not diminish because you are hiding from it. The calling waits. The gifting waits. The height waits. It does not shrink because you have been afraid. It only waits for the moment when you stop hiding and let it be seen.
π 1 Samuel 9:2; 10:21β23 Β· The Tallest Man in Israel Was Found in the LuggageWhen Scripture first introduces Saul, it does not begin with his heart or his calling β it begins with his body. He was a handsome young man. There was not a man among all the people of Israel more impressive than he. From his shoulders upward he was taller than any of the people. This is the man God chose to be Israel's first king: visually arresting, physically commanding, the kind of person a crowd parts for without knowing why.
And yet, on the day all Israel assembled to meet their king, this towering figure was nowhere to be found. The lot fell on his name. The crowd looked for him. God told them where he was: crouched among the baggage, hidden in the pile of packs and supplies. The man built like a king was in the last place anyone would look for one.
Here is the shattering irony of Saul's beginning: his stature was never the question. Israel could see from fifty yards away that he was built for this. Head and shoulders above everyone β literally. Every physical signal said: this is the man. But physical height has never been what God is after, and it has never been enough to make a person step into their calling. Saul's body was ready. His soul was hiding.
When they pulled him out and set him before the nation, his height was finally visible to everyone. But it had always been there β in the baggage, unchanged. The gifts God places in us do not shrink when we hide. They wait. They are as tall in the dark as they are in the light.

Prayer
Father, I confess that I have hidden more often than I have stood. I have let fear convince me that the gifts you placed in me are too much, or not enough, or not really there at all. Today I choose to believe that what you placed in me before I was born has not diminished because I've been afraid to use it. Bring me out of the baggage, Lord. Give me the grace to stand in the place you have put me, and the faith to trust that you go with me. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Think about it
Where are you currently hiding from something you have been called to? What would it look like to simply stand up?
I will stop hiding from what God has called me to and choose to stand in the place He has prepared for me.
