Surrender in Greek is hupotassō — a military word meaning to arrange oneself under a commanding authority. It comes from tassō (to arrange, put in order) with the prefix hypo (under), so the image is not of being pinned down by an enemy but of stepping into your proper place in a formation. Hupotassō is an act of voluntary positioning, not defeat — it describes someone who sees the larger plan and willingly takes their coordinated place within it.
Declarations
- ✦ I surrender my will to God and find my strength in proper position under his authority.
- ✦ I bring my honest desires to God and release them into his hands.
- ✦ Surrender is not defeat — it is wisdom, trust, and the mark of the Spirit in me.
- ✦ I pray with Jesus: not my will, but yours be done.
Prayer
Father, I come to you with the things I am holding — the outcomes I want, the cups I am begging you to remove, the plans I have built. I do not want to pretend I am fine. So I name them honestly: here is what I want. And now I practice what Jesus practiced: not my will, but yours. I choose to step into position under you — not because I have no desires but because I trust that your plan is wiser and kinder than anything I can engineer. Teach me that surrender is not defeat. Show me that the place under your authority is the safest place I could stand. I give you what I've been gripping. Have your way. In Jesus' name, Amen.
