šāmaʿ · H8085 · HEBREW
The Hebrew word šāmaʿ (שָׁמַע) carries three inseparable layers: to perceive with the ear — to take in sound with active, intentional attention rather than passive noise, to understand and process — to receive what is spoken into the mind and heart, weighing it with full comprehension, and to obey and respond — to act on what was heard, because in Hebrew thought, hearing that produces no response was never really hearing at all. In the Shema — "Hear, O Israel" — God is not asking for nodding acknowledgment. He is calling for a whole-life orientation.
